I installed the TRD S/C on Sunday and got the reflash done on Monday. I've noticed this rough/raspy noise at low engine loads under 2000rpm in any gear, especially when cruising and just maintaining my speed.

It goes away if I apply more throttle or increase engine speed. At 2500rpm its completely gone. If I give it enough gas to start hearing the S/C whine, I don't get it. I don't get it at idle and I do not get it if I rev the motor to 2000rpm in neutral.

I'm almost certain its not pinging. It isn't a consistent tapping noise and it gets better if I give it more gas.

The documentation with the supercharger says to expect some additional noises and they are normal. Is what I'm describing normal?

    -Thanks!

    The placard that is supposed to be hung on the rearview mirror for the customer on delivery says;

"At idle you may hear a medium-pitch rattle from the supercharger main housing. This will diminish at about 400-500rpm above idle"

I get the medium pitch rattle but not at idle and it doesn't go away until past 2000rpm.

This is normal as per TRD technician. At first they had to replace some of the supercharger thinking that there is something wrong with them.
I have over 15 000 miles on mine and runs perfect. The noise is as present as the day one. At first, I was worrying about any noise, specially that I did the installation my self.
Just take it slow for first few 100's miles, till the braking in period is gone,, then let it spin.
Keep a close eye on that belt. Would be surprise if it last more then 10 000 miles.

    Thanks much guys!

The instructions didn't mention a break in period so I just went power-happy about 15 minutes after I got it back from the reflash. I've driven about 500 miles already since the install, most of it cruising on the highway but a bunch of full throttle 3rd gear passing-people deals though.

I tried catching the noise with my digital video cam but the rattle isn't audible on playback. It is definitely coming from the S/C housing, where the roots are.

Got the boost gauge hooked up to the pressure port on the S/C while I was investigating and taking video :) Got it up to 6psi while testing. I was suprised that the needle is pegged at 20in/Hg at idle.

It sounds about right, I believe mine made the noise for the first few couple weeks, and I think once the belt breaks in it stopped on mine, keep us posted with the new Info.

Thanks for the PM and post KTM! I'll be driving it around quite a bit while I'm on vacation here in Chesapeake. Hopefully it'll get better by the time I get back.

Ok...I found this on YouTube. Its similar to the sound I hear, but nowhere near as loud. It was so subtle that my digital camera would not pick up the sound from inside the cab. Its noticeable and sounds like shit. I'm going to take it to the dealer next week just to be safe but I guess that means I gotta take the TRD intake off first ::groan::

you might be paranoid, let someone else take a ride in your taco, dont mention anything, and as him/her describe any noticeable noises.

Haha well if they junk the one I got I'll do what I can to get it back for 'educational purposes' :p I'll let you know how it goes. I got a service advisor back home that I trust so I'll take it to him when I get back from vacation.

Yep, that was it! I still get the rattle at idle, but in the video it kept on after he revved the motor - thats the noise I was worried about.

The good news is that after 700mi since the install, the noise has quieted down considerably. I hardly notice it anymore :) Don't think I'll need to take the truck in to have it looked at.

Like a king! :D Towing my bike on the way back was a breeze! I was suprised at how bogged down the stock truck was towing that little trailer and motorcycle on the highway but thats not a problem anymore :)

I also got 18mpg while I was down in Chesapeake. It was mostly highway when I was going to see my friend 1 1/2hrs away. I haven't seen that kind of mileage since before I put the lift on. I also managed to get 13mpg around town with a lot of boost-happy playing around.

    And the S/C whine...ohhh...:D

    Reviving an old thread ...

I’ve come across the same rattle. Replaced the coupler, and it’s still there.
Unfortunately, I have around 10k miles on my SC and I’ve just started noticing the sound. I’m starting to think that’s just how the SC sounds...
