I have this exact issue. If i rev the truck in neutral nothing, but while im driving at around 1600-2k rpm theres this shitty sounding rattle almost like an exhuast leak (there isnt one my exhaust was fixed up a little while ago). Its more intense when cold but once it warms up its still there. Super annoying.

I'm going with ping too. Normally that's a hot weather problem, not cold. But cruddy winter gas can also be a problem.

So if your premium fuel test (which should be done ASAP) can also be an E0 fill, that would even be more telling.

Do you have a scan tool that would show any pending codes for the knock sensor? If it's not doing it's job to retard timing..........

You mention you have a manual and the noise is 1-2k. That's prime engine lug territory if you are in too high a gear and don't squeeze the throttle carefully. Often you can hear ping and rod knock at the same time. If you are unsure, play with being in a lower gear and see if it helps.

Sorry for the late reply, been a busy week.

Yes I have an Ultragauge and no codes are showing.

I put 92 in it this morning to see if that help, had to wait for the tank to empty. So sometime today when I go out for lunch or go home, I should be able to tell if that helps.

Can you get it to do it standing still? If so, open the hood, have a friend work the throttle, and pinpoint the location where the noise is coming from. Could be a metal rattle from any number of bits and bobs, to engine pre-ignition to spark knock...

So the gas didn't really seem to help, I started driving around with the window down, and it really sounds like something metal is loose on the outside. It really does not sound internal.

Bed bolts? Spare tire chain? Surely they've been mentioned

Checked the spare tire chain, and that seems fine. Didn't check the bed bolts. Still sounds like the noise seems to be coming from the front somewhere.

A little of this and a little of that.
I feel like I'm sort of in a similar situation. I replaced the full factory exhaust with the full URD system on my 2012 4.0L along with all new gaskets. Installed everything myself, torqued to spec, slapped on some anti-seize, ran it, checked torque again, the whole nine yards. Developed a sort of "bearing balls coated in oil and dropped into a hot can" noise. Chased it down to a loose O2 bung plug that increased in volume under load, fixed 80% of the noise. Through the troubleshooting process I sheared off one of the outlet flange studs on the AICV (right bank for reference). Luckly there is enough of the stud left and undamaged corresponding stud to provide enough axial and radial tension to function normally. There is still a bit of residual noise but my theory is that the original manifold has thicker walls providing some sound dampening, the URD design is entirely different from OEM allowing for exhaust to flow at higher velocities with less restrictions. I also think that there is more turbulence now, especially where the pipes merge from three to one. Those aforementioned variables could be what I am experiencing, but idk if that is relative to what the OP and others are experiencing.

So after much time, I am staring to think it may be the lifters not getting oil until the truck is up to warmer temps. Does anyone here run a thinner oil in the winter?

If it's now doing it all the time you might have a collapsed lifter...

Its doing it only is cold weather. one the truck is warm enough it goes away, That's why I think maybe the lifers are not getting oil until the truck warms up. Idk, but I definitely think the noise is a lifter at his point, anyway to further troubleshoot a bad / sticky lifter?

Sounds like your problem is slightly different than mine. If you put it in neutral and rev does it make the same noise? If not its not an engine issue

yep so its almost certainly a engine problem. Gonna have to do some digging to pin point it though. Have you brought it to a mechanic just to have a look?
