Is the manual transmission that much better than the auto transmission?

You were obviously misled. Who ever told you the Tacoma 3.5 will rev to 9k and produce 450hp stock was lying. It doesn't need to be anywhere near that to be better than the AT.

Just bought my wife a CVT Crosstrek. Wanted to check out a manual, but there weren't any available anywhere remotely close by, and it would have taken 10-12 weeks if we ordered one. Yes, it's a bit short on power, but it gets 30 mpg which was her primary concern this time around.

Side note: We also test drove the Honda HR-V. That thing was ridiculously underpowered.

That was where we were at in 2014. There were no MTs around in any model and the XT that we got was the only one in the area. Like you, the only other option was ordering and waiting.

Yeah. The turbo MPGs are a disappointing. She averaging about 21 now, only due to the greater distance that she is now driving. The Taco is getting that post-TSB being driven more aggressively than she does. 27 or so on highway trips isn't too bad.

If performance numbers made me buy a vehicle I wouldn’t have bought a Tacoma.

Have you ever driven an FR-S, Miata, S2000 or the like? None of those cars are fast, but I’d never touch an automatic in those vehicles because of all the fun that is had shifting gears. Not to mention the Crosstrek has a CVT in it... but gets 35mpg and has more cargo space than some high end SUVs

Y’all gotta do what you want, I honestly just don’t want an MT so I don’t have to be one of you “MT or die” guys. I’ll stick to the AT, and pick up the S209 :spending:

I get what your saying with the s2000, miatas, and FR-S but comparing your Crosstrek's drivability to any of these legendary coupes is sacrilege.

Okay this “Bish” did not compare the Crosstrek to an S2k, FR-S or Miata... Can we get that straight before you roast my auto transmission anymore..

Legendary FR-S lol. At least call it the 86 if we're going to dump mountains of praise on it.

I never really got why people complain about manuals in traffic, especially with this truck. If you're moving, first gear will idle along. If you're not moving, pop the truck in neutral. If you're slipping the clutch constantly, which is about the only way I can imagine this really causing so much discomfort to people, you're not doing it right.

I drive in city traffic every day. Love the manual. Honestly the only time I ever even think about having an automatic is doing really slow technical stuff on trails where I don't want to roll backwards.

As mentioned previously just have Transmission shop do some perf mods to your auto . Such as upgraded performance torque converter and then either a shift kit or full manual valve body installed

You'll have an ear to ear smile everytime you drive especially when you experience hard firm shifts

Also it's so much fun driving a car with a auto that has a 4500 stall converter and reverse manual valve body on the street !!!

So the MT Crosstek is "fun" like an S2000 and the MT Tacoma isn't in your opinion. Gotcha
