The scene points weren't paying off with the manual transmission or his wife told him to get rid of it because of the transmission.

Is the used SR from a dealer or private sale? Curious what they're asking for it.

I say go for the discontinued 5spd while you have the chance, but I may be slightly biased.

I have an 18 TRDOR 6MT. If I had been ready to purchase while they were still available, I’d have gotten a 2.7 4x4 5spd and put a locker in the back. I don’t find the 3.5 that inspiring and I like how the 2.7 is easy to work on and proven. Plus you skip out on the finicky TSS.

I actually LOVE the TSS on my SR. Funny its such a poverty spec truck, but has adaptive cruise and auto headlights that I love using always

6MT is great to drive. Definitely try it before you decide

I like the SR but I am biased as I own a 2017 SR 5 speed. It does what I want but I knew what I was going to use it for and what I was not going to use it for such as drag racing or pulling anything heavier than my small dump trailer. I like the Pros too but for the extra amount of money I would get a Tundra, F150 or the new Ram Rebel. Pretty sure you will be happy with either Tacoma.

I somewhat have both, base model 1st gen 2.7l 5spd and my new O.R. 6spd.

If you intend to use it as a truck, get the v6 with 6spd

I love my 1st gen, but that 4 cylinder is just to weak for a truck to be used as a truck. It does okay pulling trailers but get in a hurry or try to pass and its a straight up mma fight with the pedals

I drove both and found them great to drive. Just stuck - will be an easy decision if the 5spd sells as it's not easy to find them, much less with the right mileage and in the color I want.

I believe 2017 was the last 5 speed Manual in the SR and they did away with it for 2018

The only thing I don't like on the SR is the HU. That can be changed simply enough. I own an OR, but if I was buying today, i'd probably go SR as there is nothing I have done to my OR that I couldn't do to an SR. I will admit that I would miss the power, as much as the 3.5 gets ripped on, it pulls pretty hard when asked. It tows nicely as well.

I'd probably get an SR5 if I was in the market to split the difference. I do like the power rear window which the SR doesn't have.

Plus 12k is nothing to sneeze at.

I've driven the new 4 banger and would never buy it. Can't get out of its own way. Go for the OR or if you can deal with an auto get an SR double cab and install lift, tires, racks, whatever with the $5k you saved buying the SR.

    I have put 217,500 miles on my 2.7L 4 door gen 1

I have put 2,800 miles on my 2.7L AC gen3

I assure you, they can get out of their own way. Getting out of the Prius’ way, well that’s another matter entirely ....

I absolutely loved my SR. Probably the best truck I ever owned. I with they had it in a crew cab manual 4x.

The SR is hands down the best truck Toyota has ever made. The 3rd gen 2.7 is night and day different than the 3rz of the past.

I would think about (your) age and financial exposure. If the SR does everything you want and lets you save or put that $12k toward an investment that could help you into your first home or spend a year traveling abroad or having a child or something else important, that might be the truck. If money’s relatively abstract for you, meaning you are comfortable and have a high chance of staying that way, then it might depend on which one you really like driving more.

I sometimes wish I got the 4-cyl. Foolproof, great mpg, reliable, easy to work on, cheap too

The SR (2016/17) has R156, which has some kind of fancy double something synchronizers. Supposedly makes it switch gears more smoothly?

I can't comment on the 1st Gen 2.7, but I use mine as a truck on a regular basis and have no issues with lack of power.

Every single piece of material for my kitchen remodel has been picked up with the taco. Framing lumber, windows, subfloor, drywall, shiplap for the ceiling, 450sqft solid oak flooring.
This is incorrect. I have one sitting outside at this very moment.
