Is the manual transmission that much better than the auto transmission?

Whats funny is the 16 and 17 Tacoma's have the best 0-60 times over any 2nd gen. Passing is insane in the 3rd gen with 18% more hp.
If 3rd is a golf cart, what was the infamous so called glorious 2nd ?

Thanks for all the help nonetheless gentleman.

I honestly just miss driving a manual and was bitter that I feel like I should have went manual.

They all have there perks though, for now S-drive and ECT is the most fun I can have hitting a few twists and turns.

Maybe if I can get a dealer to do a close to even swap I’d consider it... but that would require more negotiation, more sitting at dealerships, and of course dealing with more car dealers...

I’m sure I’d be bitching about the manual though when I hit stop and go traffic on my 7 hour road trip home, so the grass is always greener.

Don't say stuff like that in public! I swear, the 2nd Gen'ers have a standing search for the 2nd Gen being mentioned in the 3rd Gen forum.

After driving a standard cab 92 toyota pickup with a stick... I dont think I could drive a new taco with a manual. I just loved the bench seat with the long gear throw way to much, It would never quite feel right.

According to KBB my 16 is down about $7k. :( I sold my 04 for $4k less than I paid after 12 years. Fortunately, I like it OK and no plans to sell.

You'll spend more keeping a MT running over the long haul. It isn't any trick to go 400,000 miles and not spend a dime on an AT, including no fluid changes. You'll spend more on clutch replacement than on an AT.

There are absolutely zero advantages, but if someone just likes to stir the stick while driving and thinks that is fun then they should go with a MT. If you think a manual gives you more control you're doing something wrong when driving an AT.

I also had three people hit me from behind in that truck and it never got a scratch on the steel bumper. Each incident would have probably done $1-3k of damage to the 16.

Yes we will. Yes, we will.

Only if we remembered to throw a pack of premoistened baby wipes in the seat back pouch though. That's messy work, and I'll not abide an itchy anus.

Add: How do you "pre"-moisten something? Don't you just moisten it?

Oh crap, I'm off topic. MT is best

Count me in as one of the strange manual transmission guys. So far in my streak of vehicles, the only auto I bought was my wife's car. I love shifting and it brings me back to when I was a kid and I'd go somewhere with my Grandpa in his mid' 70's manual transmission Bronco. Another added bonus, the wife refuses to learn so I don't have to worry about her taking my truck and filling up the back with all sorts of crap.

Agree 100%. The 4LO off road is amazing with manual. The efi/valve timing tuning gives fantastic engine braking that helps on descents. The update to the tuning from Toyota fixed all my problems with low speed throttle sensitivity and partial-throttle hesitation. I’m 100% happy with it now, and I’ve always preferred it over the automatic. It’s a very easy manual to drive, and I live here in SoCal so I am driving in the worst traffic of the country and I still like it.

#1 reason I have always had manuals,I can do a clutch myself in an afternoon for a couple hundred bucks in parts. Or I can replace an automatic with a rebuilt one in an afternoon for 5 times the price.

This is my first truck after 30 years of driving sport compacts which were all manuals. So a manual Tacoma was the only choice for me. But I will tell you, in comparison to a car, the clutch is heavy and the shifting is agricultural-like. Yes, I understand it is a truck and not a Civic Si. But the same manual experience is there for me. If you get satisfaction with perfectly executed shifts and total control over you powertrain, get the manual. Just don't expect it to be a smooth driving experience unless you really work at it.
