Auto LSD question...

Whenever I am driving through the sand dunes or up and down the river my truck starts to feel like its going to get stuck because it slows down so much but I never get stuck. So my question is:

Does the Auto LSD slow you down when driving in stuff like deep sand, mud, etc.. So that you wont lose traction and get stuck by transferring all the power to the wheel that's not starting to spin thus causing you to slow down?

 

With my truck being a Sport I don't have the option of turning it off. As far as I know.

 

you can turn the lsd off, press the lsd button then it will say auto lsd then press and hold it again and it will turn the lsd off

 

I have a 2006 so I dont have any special buttons besides the bed outlet and fog lights.

 

Hmmm.. I dont think my truck even has the auto LSD now.

 

you might just be losing traction and spinning in the sand.....

 

Ok I guess I have a mechanical limited-slip rear differential.

How does this work?

Well I've taken my Sport out on sand dunes, up all sand and mud river beds (with and without water flowing), up rocky creeks, up steep ravens, across rocky terrain while visiting family in Moab.

I have yet to get stuck. I just dont know my truck as well as I should I guess.

 

How many miles on the truck and when did you replace rear diff fluid ?

 

I just hit 80k last week and I've never replaced it and don't know if the original owner has either (im 2nd owner)

 

I believe it's every 60k?

Wow. You should replace your rear diff, front diff, and transfer case oil as soon as you get a chance. The maintenance book says to do it every 30K miles. I just swapped mine out a few months ago. Not hard at all, you can easily do it yourself. But with as many miles as you got on your truck and as much as you use your 4-wheel drive, you should def look into changing out the fluids soon. I also have an 06' Sport 4x4.

 

Hmmm I guess tomorrow Ill be doing some fluid maintenance since I do use 4 wheel drive often. Thanks for the tip

 

Yeah no problem but make sure you use the right stuff for the rear diff. There has been many threads on people getting all kinds of noises from the rear diff cause of the gear oil and additives they have used.

 

Well there is your problem. Book says 30k but does not distinguish between lsd or non lsd. You are probably 50K miles or more overdue which means cluthcpacks could be getting gunked up. To test if your LSD still works
1. lift your rear axle with vehicle in 2wd and front wheels blocked.
2. put torque wrench on one of the lug nut and set it to 150 foot - pounds
3 Try to turn the wheel
If it takes less then 100 foot-pound to turn wheel then your LSD probably took some damage.
if it is like 20 foot-pound only then its toasted.

 

I had the same problem,and I change my diff. oil and I had no problem more...

in the future I want to put the a Locker, is the best solution...

Also a piece of advice.
When you buy used car, regardless of the miles first thing is to replace all the fluids with new ones and do all the required maintenance.
Every used car I bought went to garage first for overhaul. Most of the time people when they know they will sell a car they neglect everything.
