Smart move....that is exactly what I would do in that situation.

Metal shavings in oil before the first oil change is normal in this truck. And there's no need to change the oil until 10,000 miles. Were you low on oil at 8,000 miles? What made you check?

Kinda weird that nobody figured out that you should make the dipstick tube harder than the dip stick and round off the edges to prevent metal shavings when checking your oil by now.

    Just a thought.

    Shhhhh.

We need to get at least 40 pages out of this.....

Now that the dealer has weighed in, half the posters will say they smell bullshit and the other half will say "I told you so".

In the meantime, Google has reported that the search engine terms "Tacoma", "metal shavings" and "dipstick" are locking up the servers.

Isn't the block aluminum and the dip-stick steel?

Checked my oil with 2500 miles on the new engine. It also had some shavings.

I cleaned the pan right before I dropped the oil and filter on it at 2k miles. 99% of what’s seen there came from the filter. Where it should have came from.

There wasn’t anything there at the 10k mi mark.

Guess what?? There's a hunk of metal under the hood. There's moving parts with high pressure in them, kinda like explosion high. The only barrier between each piece of metal is less than a thousandth of an inch of oil. There's gonna be metal shavings. It's normal wear and tear.

You'll find the same thing in the transmission, transfer case, differentials, and any other moving metal part. That's why drain plugs have a magnet on them.

I cannot imagine having any tolerance for metal shavings in a new engine. Oil, even mobil 1 is inexpensive.
I change oil after the first few k, then every 5k after that. One wants that engine & it's bearings to last a long, long time.
If you see filings, change the oil ASAP, and check it every thousand or so to see if it recurs.
The dipstick generated filing theory is BS, unless you stand there hour after hour inserting and removing it with gusto.

I really hate the 3rd Gen dipstick setup. I always get shaving from the dipstick tube from the sharp edges on the dipstick. I wonder if there is any replacement for this? Something like this would be perfect for tacomas

    Lift,tires, lights,tint,
Put dipstick in until it starts rubbing but not all the way into the oil. If they have shavings it's from it grinding the tube, if no shavings it's in oil. I been freaking out and figured I'd try this and it was most definitely from the tube not engine failure like most people think.

I just had same issue took for early change just got 23 tacoma trd 2 weeks ago at 6.5k miles now at 7 , i set appointment 7am to see if do early 10k maintenance , and to look into a whining sound upon letting off gas pedal at road speeds and random or when under a load / going up hill or accelerating quickly to gain on hill. 2 days later 200 bucks on rental from enterprise , toyota had none available, im told the sound is aggressive tires and normal sounds which very distinguished different sound than my tires im not dumb . Red flag for me positive i was lied too . A 10k visit includes checking all fluids and topping off so i didn't trust after result of sound checked my dip stick had metal shavings that wasn't there before i had oil changed , and i mean a good bit . i redipped up to 10 times and every time pulled out with various sizes at first glanced i thought may have been cotton from a shop rag but quickly realized it was gritty wiping on paper towel . so i took photos of towel and saved theme . Had to drive a distance about 60 to 80 total and checked again still shavings but less amount maybe smaller if anything but every dip it will come out with metal and seems to be steel cause it would stick to stick like metal shavings react on a magnet at the tip. going to meet with sales man tomorrow after ranting threw email to theme and sent message to corporation . I figured flush the engine and do maybe 3 oil changes back to back with maybe 20 miles on each one drain change filter on all and see if that gets any out plus i ordered some oil sample kits , i dont think its from engine im leaning more toward contamination from outside source maybe funnel or intentional for all i know . they were short handed those 2 days i was told and only one person available to do the road check for sound i asked about on busy holiday end of week , pushing customers threw the door .Paranoid a bit but we will see what they do to make right , also i checked around my rear diff fill nut and trans over fill and fill and looked as if nothing was touched and its supposed to be part of service so i called theme out on that, . referenced info found on hear about mexico made 3rd gens coming from factory with up to 2 quarts low in transmission and mines made in mexico and whining is same symptoms others had before finding out or having torque converter failure , i also have a slight shudder or hiccup at road speeds randomly feels like when timing is off by one tooth on a distributor type vehicle random miss pretty much and makes whole truck do a small gallop , that's what it feels like so im guessing trans . thought i was done dealing with other ppls problems sold to me i guess not they will do oil change cause warranty states to redeem so many changes in certain time or mileage frame its all up too you at no charge say 4 in 50000 mile 4 year kinda thing . my bad i just bombed this post , good luck my dude hope we dont need new motors lol 3000000 miles later

my truck does the same thing I really think its the dip stick and how sharp it is i still need to sand it down a bit i think it will fix the issue i can feel it bind as it goes down the tube.

    Super-charged
I bought my truck a month ago and it is supercharged so I’ve been a little worried about the reliability of it (only 24,000 miles). Did my first oil change on it today. Looked in the filter and had small pieces of metal trapped in it. Instantly freaked out… I spent an hour looking stuff up online and all I saw was doomsday stuff. I gave up, came up with a plan to sell it, and decided to just cut my loss and refill it. Upon refilling it, I pulled the dipstick out it felt like it was grinding. Like nails on a chalk board grinding. Sure enough the end of it was ground extremely poorly. There was a ridge on one end that you could cut paper with. I put it in and pulled it out multiple times and there was metal shavings on it… I shaved the ridge off and hoping that’s the issue. Will be doing an oil change in 1000 miles and will get an oil test to make sure. Hopefully I’ll sleep tonight lol

Don't listen to those saying it's not the dipstick, it definitely is. Mine was doing the same exact thing, you could feel it scraping going down the tube. I hit the end with a buffing wheel and problem solved.
