Ca. requires biannual smog inspections after six years of ownership for a new car and no inspections for 1975 or older. It took my '93 truck about 15 years before it didn't pass. I'm not sure why people are complaining about these things. I went to school in L.A. in the mid 1980's and remember all the smog alert days when you couldn't see the San Gabriel Mtns from Pasadena. That almost never happens anymore and we have far more cars on the road now than we did then. We should ALL want the cleanest vehicles possible, both for our sake now and for our children and grandchildren later. I have had to do a safety inspection only once in 45 years of car ownership here and that was when I bought a totaled truck back from the insurance company that was awarded that fine salvage title. Had to change out the Cibié headlights to pass that. Virginia does seem draconian. There are lots of great reason for living in most states. Aren't we lucky to have such a choice.

"Vehicles registered in areas subject to the biennial smog certification program are required to submit evidence of a smog certification every other renewal period. Owners of vehicles six or less model years old will pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification. The registration renewal notice mailed to you by the department will indicate if a smog certification is required. If a smog certification is required and you have not had a smog inspection, you may still pay your registration fees to avoid any late fees. However, you will not receive your new registration or year sticker until the smog information has been received by DMV."

There's even one county here in California that doesn't have smog inspections. Modoc County, in the far northeastern corner of the state, and I do know people who register their modified sports/race cars there to avoid, but it does mean a P.O. Box and a yearly road trip to get your renewal notice.

Check out my build thread (Beginning of Money Pit)

The average insurance cost per vehicle in VA is lower, and Id attribute some of that to the draconian safety inspections.

3rd brake light? This is the first vehicle i have ever owned with one. Took it out right away. If someone cant see the tail lights thats not my problem.

Clearwater is not even technically part of FL. From Nov to April it's a Canadian province. Dirt-bagetry extends far and wide in FL.

To be fair, I can see why they have to be able to see the third brake light for your truck to pass inspection. The third light is a requirement. No one would question the logic of a mod failing an inspection if the mod covered one of the headlights, turn signals or "regular" brake lights. And I don't blame the techs for not wanting to mess with the topper -- imagine how irate one of us would be if they tried to lower it and binded up one of the arms or tore the canvas.

All that aside, OP -- that's a damn fine looking truck.

Thank gid we have non of this "saftey inspection" bs where i live... and registration is dirt cheap too...

After living in Utah and paying north of 500 a year to register and have my vehicles inspected I am loving the fact that it cost me a whopping 80 dollars for a 2 year registration...
