Whats your price range and what do you want them for?

The beefiest skids out there are BAMF, those are 1/4 inch steel plate. They also make 3/16 steel if i remember correctly
Then you have Mobtown, RCI, SOS. All of them make 3/16th steel skids

Ive heard good things about all.

Some of them do manufacture aluminum skids, but in my opinion, skids should ALWAYS be steel.

is a skid plate even necessary if you are just doing basic off roading? such as going over dirt hills and cruising up mountains and cruising around desserts?

A front skid plate is cheaper insurance than damage. Id say if you are not doing anything crazy, a front IFS skid in 3/16 steel should be all you'd really need. Think about it like this.

300 dollar skid vs thousands in repairs, over an accident or otherwise. Just my opinion

Im sure that'd be enough for you, but you are gonna pay more for that new than a aftermarket offering thats better.

    slawmunny,
As the definition of "going off road" seems to very, member to member, knowing what ya wanna do would be helpful. If your off roading is gonna be mostly on established numbered Forest Service Roads (FSR) or National Forest Service Roads (NFSR) ya probably can get away with aluminum. If your gonna go off the FSRs and NFSRs and climb over every rock and boulder in sight, then steel is the way to go. Having said all of that, there are FSRs here in Colorado that really make ya wonder if it really is an established road.
I switched over to RCI aluminum for my 2018, and so far the plates are exceeding my expectations. Hope this helps.

    Bob

I actually paid less for my TRD Pro skid than an RCI aluminum would have been after shipping. I have the RCI trans and transfer case and they are 1/4 aluminum just like the pro. For my use the pro will be plenty and it looks better than the RCI.

The second gen TRD Pro skid also fits, you can run it as is or put in some longer spacers for a better fit. They are thinner aluminum than the 3rd gen but will handle light off-roading at 1/3 the cost.

That’s all I do and my stock sheet metal skid plate is mangled! Sometimes you can’t help but drag over a big rock in the middle of the trail. Plus low ground clearance.

You would need to remove or modify the front air dam / lower valence to accept the TRD Pro plate, which will ding your highway mpgs a bit.

You could just add the OEM transmission “protection” plate that comes with the Off-Road Tacos. It’s the red section in the pictures. I picked mine up for $25 from another member. Serious rock crawlers or guys that want the Pro look sell them somewhat regularly here. That combined with your stock Sport brush guard would cover the same area as the Pro. (The transmission plate and the OR OEM gas tank skid with the Spectra ST323 straps could both be had and installed (by you) for well under $200 if you watch the TW classifieds.)

This is what I did to my SR5. I drive on Forest Roads and 4WD trails strewn with baby heads, and the OR setup works fine for me. I probably didn’t even need the extra protection for what I do.

Just crawled under and checked my 2018 TRD Sport. No skid plate installed. Anyone know if this was this deleted for the 2018 Sport?

Are you using the RCI trans and tcase skids in conjunction with the TRD IFS skid?

Just ordered the aluminum RCI Full Skid Package deal. The price reduction in buying the full package along with their December coupon paid for the shipping cost. Talked with them for a while by phone and it was a pleasant experience.
