Cleaning Backup Camera Lens...??

With winter upon us and here that means messy roads with sand and salt, what do you use to clean the backup camera lens? After a short drive on the above mentioned roads, the backup camera video is just a blur. Are there any products that are backup camera safe?

I've used this on headlights and it's plastic safe. I'm guessing (hoping) that this would be acceptable for the backup camera lens....

I just wipe mine off with a wet finger. If it needs drying, whatever is handy. Not very sophisticated. But that's me.

I think your headlight safe product will be just fine.

 

In the winter here, with all the sand and salt that is used, the sides and rear of vehicles no longer have their original color. It becomes a nasty brownish coating so I think the spray in my case would be less harmful than physically wiping the lens. I'll give it a whirl today and see....

 

I've been wiping mine with my finger, sleeve, whatever for 8 winters now and I don't see any scratches on my lens.

 

I use glass cleaner without ammonia and a microfiber cloth.

 

When it rains, snows or its any bad weather, when I walk up to the drivers door, I run my finger across it...........not technical, but it works!

 

Gloved finger it's generally cold out when there is salt on the road. Thinking about a very tiny wiper and an itty bitty squatter though.

Whatever you do, i would make sure there is a 'wet' aspect to it to reduce friction. Don't dry wipe grit over it. Common sense. Other than that, o really don't think much about it.

 

I lick my finger and wipe it off... seriously guys, it’s not a Bentley.

My thoughts exactly. Wiping it dry with crud on it will be like using sandpaper..... Other than water, my concern was with the compatibility of a cleaner that doesn't freeze with the lens cover. I didn't want the cleaner to attack the lens cover....

 

As a fellow inhabitant of Central NY, I've been wondering what to use on my Taco's camera as well. I do notice my gf's new Highlander doesn't have nearly the problem with salt and spray effecting the camera. I've been wondering if a small aerodynamic add-on might help out?
Beyond that, I've been going with the wet finger for what I know will be a very temporary fix.

 

Great minds think alike. I was thinking about the same thing. Maybe using kydex (easily thermoformed) and some 3M high bond tape. Hmmmmmm.......

 

hmmm. Northern Vermont here, wipe and done 6 winters no issues.
Edit - my rear cam shows up in the rear view mirror & I tow alot that sucker is super handy for the hook up. Merry Christmas!

I believe I have a piece of black kydex if you don't have any. I'll send it to you. In looking at the camera, it looks like it might be difficult to fab something that will be aesthetically pleasing and be effective. I never took notice of the salt spray at the tailgate at speed. Does it roll up from underneath, roll in from the sides or over the top? Or all of the above?......
Recognizing that this endevour might require a significant amount of energy to a problem many or most consider insignificant, it still could prove to be fun. Nothing ventured nothing gained....

 

I'll have to see if there's a visible spray pattern, or perhaps go old school and tape some yarn streamers and a short drive to watch the airflow...
