Purpose built race trucks do great on groomed race tracks, I agree.

I haven’t read through this thread because I know most answers will be complete BS. If I were you man I’d go buy some good recovery gear(maxtrax, shovel, air compressor, recovery strap), air down to 15 psi and go see what you can get into in 2wd. Most people who didn’t grow up doing serious wheeling will be shocked at what they can do in a 2wd Tacoma. Also read up on when and how to properly utilize your rear locker, and get experience driving off-road. It’ll do you good

I’ve circuited that very track in my non purpose built 01. Get real. And I say that with love. Get real.

If op needs to go mudding or rock crawling, a 2wd isn’t gonna cut it. If op wants to shred the gnar, op could use a locker and winch, and could shred away, in most other reasonable circumstances.

Paid $22000 for my 2011 SR5 4x4 never been stuck, paid down to $15k now, sorry man, you paid sticker for a brand new truck. We live and learn.

You don’t need 4wd for big bear. Carry chains and get some tires which are better in snow. With my Blizzaks I rarely even need 4wd. I hear Duratracs do well in the snow if you don’t need a dedicated snow tire.

Sand, even 4wd trucks get stuck. Air down and carry some max tracks.

They've sold the 2wd Prerurunner TRD Offroad since the 1st Gen Tacomas. If you only go to the snow once or twice a year and drive on sand once or twice a year your 2wd will be fine. Use chains in the snow. Air down on the beach. Get a good set of tires and have fun. I keep traction boards and straps in my truck when I'm going off road. I feel your pain but it's not worth losing thousands of dollars.

No guy on this forum, 4WD or not, could easily follow this 2WD Model T.

Don't get your panties in a twist, alright? All we're saying is that to market a product as "off-road" worthy without even having a 4WD is a tad silly. No one is saying a 2WD can't do shit off-road in the hands of an enthusiast. I'm sure even a lifted Corolla could get somewhere on a mild trail, but not what we're talling about.

Yeah but see, YOU think it’s silly. Nobody here is talking about a corrolla. We’re taking about Toyota trucks. Maybe this is your first Toyota, after selling off the wrx, and you just don’t know where these trucks come from and what they do. I don’t know you... so that’s entirely possible. But prerunning and 2wd have been around for awhile. Anybody who knows anything about OR can tell you there is nothing silly about 2wd. YOU just think it is. Because, as I said, you probably just don’t get it. Don’t hate me.

My crew cheif in the CG had a 2wd single cab Toyota with a locker. That thing was pretty unstoppable. Impressed me many times.

I'm not so much as pulling onto the shoulder without first engaging 4wd.

I don't hate you, I just think you expect everyone who walks into a Toyota showroom looking for a Taco to be an expert off-roader like yourself. Not really the reality. I don't know if OP knew what he was buying when they sold him on that OR but to me it's like a conflict of personality. Like buying a sports car but instead of the V8 your get the 4-cylinder but with all the badging of the V8 model. Everyone has a right to buy whatever they want, and I have the right to ask "...why?".
