Lots of trees. A come along might be useful if you're going to play in that mud. $60 at Northern Tools.

Shovel, traction boards, tires. Honestly I'm running my tires til they are done, but I picked up a 10 dollar shovel from lowes. Traction boards on sale ( excited to use them ) and get some time with people. I bet if you had a buddy or two with some knowledge it would've been a great learning experience with minimal potential for damage and tons of time to learn

Avoid water and mud. Your truck will thank you in the long run.

As someone already said and you already know, that hole was just the right size to trap you. With your front skid dug in and your hitch dragging in the back you probably didn't have much traction on the tires and were trying to plow those parts through mud -- think of it as extra weight as well as something keeping your wheels up from good contact with the ground. Those logs in front of your tires created little hills you were trying to climb over at the same time; they might have helped if they had been rough enough to provide traction but it looks like the bark was off and they were just as slippery as everything else.

Your wheels were in the deep ruts caused by all who went before you. Putting the passenger side out of the hole on the right might have kept your driver side on better ground in the hole. See below about using a stick to check things like that.

Three gear items that might have helped:-- a 4' or 5' long stick (rake handle from the hardware store) would have let you check the depth of the hole in different spots before going in. MaxTrax or cheaper but similar alternatives could have helped you get out by putting something with traction under your drive wheels after you got those logs out of the way. A shovel would have let you dig out a trench in front of your skid and around your hitch so you weren't trying to plow while climbing out of the hole.

Looks like hitch hit ground. RF tire was spinning and left front was doing nothing.

Took mine when new and stock to dunes, desert and mountains. Got stuck due to lack of lift. High center on dunes. Lack of tires for grip in mud and snow. Fixed that with 3 inch lift, larger tires and with more aggressive traction and a buddy with a winch.

Half of these “pro’s” wouldn’t of got stuck because they would of avoided the hole. What’s the fun and point of off-roading if you’re taking the easy route.

All these people telling you to throw mods at your truck when all you needed was a better line. Typical internoobs and their “advice”. I suggest going back stock and trying it again, come in more of an angle.

I think offroading is about man and machine against the terrain. I don’t always take the easiest line because I want to challenge my driving and the machine. Internoobs and mods are a part of the culture. Original post was about what he could mod so mods were offered.

I don’t really consider tires a “mod” unless he comes out with some 35” swampers. Obviously you can’t do that on a stock taco without some “mods”. It’s not like people are telling him to get a 6” lift to be able to not get stuck off-road.

I’d get some new rubber and if your gonna keep doing some off-road, especially alone, look into some straps or something if you don’t want a full blown whinch.

The OP asked for a mods to help. Sure offering unsolicited advice about a line will save some money, but we should also respect the question. I think there are some things he could do (buy) to not get stuck in this particular location. But also learning about his truck will help. No harm in answering either, no reason to make fun of people for answering the specific question either. What ever happened to the old saying, "there are no stupid questions". I think we need to get back to respecting people for being willing to ask a question. But I guess this is the internet.

The tires are your weakest link. Go with something with a 3 ply sidewall if your going to go off-road like KO2s.

OP asked what his next upgrade should be. Most said tires, which is a legitimate response if you're going to wheel in mud, since sometimes there isn't an easy line that doesn't involve going through it.

In any case, pretty much all the suggested 'mods' were tires, straps, a shovel and maxtrax. You know, that stuff he should probably have if he's going to actually be prepared.

Anyway, just so you know, answering the Op's specific question isn't an internoob mistake. Thinking you know more than everyone else, and that anyone's advice but your own is wrong does qualify though.

There were several better lines to take into that obstacle but you wanted to see if it would get stuck. I love off roading but mud just sucks and it's a pain to clean later too.

Traction boards may have helped but it really does look like you buried the hitch receiver. Mud terrain tires properly aired down might have done better but choosing the correct line is better than trying to use momentum or recovery equipment.

Be proud of yourself though for going out and trying it. We're hard wired to learn from mistakes so this was a worthwhile experience for you.
