i bought a suspension upgrade earlier this year (2015 TRD pro shocks), and I ended selling here because I felt the money should go towards paying off my loan. I am not trolling.

I paid off about 19 thousand this year. Just sent the final payment for this month.

Another 100 miles on updated 1.05. Haven’t been this excited since 1.03. Truck is back to feeling light on its feet. I did notice the 4th gear hang today a couple times even when letting off the throttle. Might be related to headwind? I popped it over to sport and manually up shifted to 5th and moved back to D and it held 5th fine. It seemed to upshift fine on the trip back. I love how it use 5th now on-the highway. Almost seamless shifts between 5th and 6th.

It does in Denver at altitude and with a grade and 33 inch skinnies all combined.

What physics is it that isn’t understood, or what is it about ‘trucks’ that isn’t understood?

My take on this whole 3rd gen drivetrain issue. IMO this truck will NEVER be 100% as most people expect it to be, there is only so much a software can fix.

The issue here is a low displacement motor with “Atkinsons Cycle” trickery on a truck that that weight over 4000lb. It appears that Toyota doesn’t care a whole lot about drivability, but rather their bottom line which is emissions/MPG.

Another problem is people often bring up the fact why other platforms with same motor tends to drive much better, well were driving a pickup with a 6 speed auto with relatively heavy duty Aisin transmission which is aimed toward long term reliability of a work truck. Also I have yet to see a lifted camry/sienna/highlander with 33” A/T tires.

Something else to think about is that Tacomas are among the last breed of pickups that keeps NA motor. Most every other manufacturer is leaving the NA world in the favor of FI, so seeing comparisons to EB motors and how much better drivability is crazy. NA does not equal FI, Im sure that rangers 2.3 EB(w/ 10 speed AT) will have much better drivability with 310lb of torque. Either way, theres no valid comparison here. Also to be fair these motors have their own problems.

Lastly, I took a quick glance at Colorado/Canyon forums, they’re also not without faults. Google Colorado transmission issues and you can see complaints of shudders, converter problems and bipolar shifting patterns in their 8 speed.

There’s no magic fix here, we can make it better, but that’s also subjective as we can see by distain of some members post 1.05 release. This is why I kinda feel bad for Mat, seems like he’s bitten off more than he can chew, not because he’s a bad tuner, but because of unrealistic expectations. FWIW I think he’s the hardest working vendor ive ever encountered on a forums, and ive been trolling forums for the last 13 years.

ALL things considered, im happy with the truck, so long as the ECU don’t learn bad habits again.

Kind of sad that my 92 Acura Legend which weighted 3500lbs and had a 3.2L V6 could do 25mpg on the highway and lasted me until 312k miles. Here we are 26 years later and it's gone backwards. Toyota had a good truck to build on with the 4.0L, too bad that emissions standards rule the world today. What bugs me is that when a truck gets half the mpg because of the emissions and wastes twice as much fuel to get there. How is that saving the planet? All I see is dollar bills in oil companies pockets.

It's good business, there is a reason why OVTune is now concentrating on the Toyota market. It's not like Mat is doing this as a favor to all of us. I like how passionate he is about his work, that is what puts him above other tuners. A good business owner stands by his products and listens to customers feedback. At $600 a tune multiplied by 2000 customers is 1.2 million dollars. :spending:

People ALWAYS think business owners are rolling in the dough, with no idea of costs of operating a business.
If Matt has put even 1/4 of that 1.2 million estimate in his pocket I would be absolutely shocked.

That said, I think your first part of the comment is legit, he is making money and on some level must enjoy this or he wouldn't be doing it. Someone smart enough to do what he has, isn't limited to just one job.

This. Effective tax rates – calculated as the total income tax owed divided by adjusted gross income – also rise with income. Depending on how a business is set-up and location typically means about 30-50% of earnings go to taxes. Just. Taxes.

Merry Christmas everyone. Thank you for the logs and feedback, I'll be sorting through it all and making some tweaks to correct that.

Do NOT give up even though we are a little behind. Because I know without a doubt the truck can drive like a normal damn car on the highway. Since 1.05 my truck is in 6th gear 90+ percent of the time at 70mph, and my test truck has never seen 20mpg average in its life before 1.05.

So let me get to the bottom of why a few trucks hang in 4th and I'm confident all will be well.
