Toyota Americanized the Tacoma front end with it's double chin, that's for sure.

Every ranger demo has put on so far has had a Tacoma onsite to compare break over and who scrapes hitches and who doesn't. The ranger is absolutely targeting Tacoma.

You should have seen the amount of low mileage 3rd gen Tacomas on tow trucks from the CPS debacle of 2016.

I have a 2012 F150 4x4 Lariat 3.5 Ecoboost w 88K miles on it. I've averaged 15.1 mpg over 88K...predominantly city driving. This was my first truck. Prior to the truck I had a 4Runner SR5 that was probably my favorite and the best vehicle I've ever had. I do a lot of hunting and fishing (2 retrievers) and have loved the utility of the truck bed. I used to have to take alot of care to not mess when hauling stuff in the 4Runner.

Ive enjoyed the truck but wouldn't say I've loved it. Like I said I love the utility of the bed and being able to haul gear and hose it down. LineX on the bed has been the bomb.

I've had several issues with the truck and have probably spent $4-5K in repairs. Coolant leak issues, blown/deteriorating turbo hoses, and 3 of the 4 door lock actuators failed and this phantom power loss when I juice it when entering the highway or passing(they never figured that one out). Of course ALL of that happened after the warranty expired. I recently starting having some sort of hard downshift issue that is making me nervous ($$$).

Despite the issues I've been long considering and waiting for the Ranger. After reading this thread and the issues with the new Ranger engine and given what I've experience, I think I'm going to pass. I was eagerly anticipating an updated/new gen 4Runner this year and was disappointed when they pushed it out to 21.

I love the styling of the Taco and am leaning to a 4X4 TRD in either sport or off road. The Tacoma's catch my eye on the road but every time I peek into one I wonder if I'll adjust to the smaller size. But then I think back to the 4Runner and it was similarly small in the interior. I'm single and hardly ever haul folks in my backseat so as long as I'm comfortable that's all that matters to me.

I'm going to go test drive the sport and offroad and see how I like em. I know end of year is a great time to buy but I'm thinking it might be a better time to buy when all the Rangers hit the dealer lots. They probably won't displace the king but they will absolutely steal sales from Toyota. I'm hoping Toyota will get aggressive and offer some discounts to compete. I just need get by for another few months before my F150 shits the bed.

Ranger outsold Tacoma until sometime during the second gens, probably because it was the "new" truck and the rangers really didn't change other than facelifts for 20 years.

Ranger will be back on top of sales. Might take a few years for it to happen though.

Seemed like a pretty good review, unbiased which seems hard to come by these days.

Pricing seems slightly more, don't like the idea of having to add options like spray in bed liner on domestic trucks. Hopefully tow package will eventually come standard like toyota on v6s since they seem to praise towing capacity.

Going to be interesting to see the comparison videos coming up. I wouldn't be surprised if it wins like motortrend truck of the year or something since it's latest out there.

Doesn't look like you can get a crew cab Rqnger with a real bed. Big pass from me. 5' bed on a small truck is useless IMO.

Correct, but you could put the tailgate down. The 6' bed isn't exactly a fullsize bed either.

I’ll never understand this. If you need a bed bigger than 5’ don’t get a midsize

going from 6 to 5 is very significant. It eliminates a lot of things from fitting easily (can utilize diagonal but then much harder to use the full bed volume). It depends on what you use the truck for and I understand a lot of SB Tacoma's are sold, just not for me and at least you have the choice.

why not? Smaller cab space makes having a bigger bed very useful. I've packed my DCLB to the brim in and out. I'd have a full size truck with their 5'7" bed (wish they were a bit longer, while the extra depth and width makes up for it slightly) and probably will for my next vehicle but didn't largly because the Tacoma is a much more friendly to drive in the city, where I live.

5' is a grocery getter. Can you even fit a motorcycle? I have been known to haul snowmobiles in my Tacoma. Not a chance with a 5' bed.
