Any pros or cons on up or down shifting in S range. I’ve read the manual. It mainly spoke of down shifting to slow the vehicle. Just interested to see if anybody was using this. Thanks.

Not a true manual shifter. Sport mode only allows you to pick the highest gear the tranny can remain in. It won't allow any shifts that might harm the tranny or engine.

lot of people use it in S5 since the truck shifts into 6th too soon.

S stands for Sequential. I think Toyota should really relabel it to M. It doesn't stand for sport like most people think as it really doesn't change things other than sets the limit on the top gear. So if you set it to S5 it will still downshift on its own between 1 and 5.

That isn’t entirely accurate. My understanding is that putting in S mode also disables the AI and learning. Because of this, it removes some of the granny mode implemented by the AI and learning. Hence the reason people think it drives sportier.

There is a full description of this on this site, and I think it is also detailed in the owners guide.

Is there a way to reset the AI and activate a new learning session?

I’ve never tried it for confirmation, but I believe consensus is that disconnecting the battery for 15+ minutes will do that.

Yes, that's right. I've been trying the S6 mode. If there is a difference it's very minor. And if you were to drive very aggressively in D arguably it would drive sportier than S mode eventually. My argument is that in most other vehicles putting the vehicles in "S" makes a noticeable difference in throttle response/shift pattern sometimes even steering feel and suspension stiffness. None of this is true in the Tacoma. That's why I think S is a misnomer.

Oh, I agree with that. My Corvette had a Sport mode. Should have been called Beast mode. My Q60 has Sport mode too. You can definitely feel the suspension tighten up in sport mode.
