hey guys, anyone have any pros and/or cons regarding upgrading a stock air filter to a K&N?? I’ve had cold air intakes on trucks before but really don’t want to mess with it this time around so I’m thinking about just upgrading the filter. Any input?

Have a Safe and Merry Christmas!

Stick to what you have stock. Zero improvement unless you are turboed or have OVtune running full exhaust

A K&N allows more dirt into your system, you also have to clean and put a specific oil on the filter that can screw with you MAF sensor to top it. Stay with a stock paper filter for best performance and filtration

That’s kind of what I was thinking. I just put an exhaust on and it sounds decent now, but I was thinking it might give me a little better sound. I’m not sold in the idea yet

The TRD intake comes with an oiled filter. FWIW. And with that, an oiled filter isn't necessarily "bad" and will not automatically cause MAF sensor problems.

    Their cleaner kit isn't $39.99 it's between $9-$15.

@Jdottav2259 You don't gain performance with the drop in filter, but you get a filter that you can just clean and not replace.

Their complete air intake will give you the typical CAI sound, but runs about $200-$250 IIRC. I have one I got on sale years ago

^^THIS... it’s not for performance, unless you believe the hype and get a CAI. It is a reuseable filter that saves money over time by not having to buy replacements. Better or worse air flow is debatable, long term cost savings is not. This is why you would or would not want to purchase one.

The best filtration down to measurable microns is the stock paper filter.

Has this been tested? I'm not doubting you at all, I'm just a nerd and like to read and learn about things like this

Yes. When you said that the stock paper filter is better than the K&N. Has anyone published experiments on that?

Look up the tens of thousands of owners that have had to replace their MAF sensor after using a K&N, or their engine.

I call bullshit on “10s of thousands,” those kinds of numbers would result in known lawsuits and not just random statements. Let’s try to keep to actual facts or reference proof such as scientific data or news articles, something.

You ain't kidding. I've run K&N. Never been plagued by any oil in the MAF much less a blown up engine. I like having a filter I can clean... oh and the extra 20 hp ;)
