All this talk of Drifters in the GFC thread has me considering other options. A camper shell may be the most appropriate action at this time. Not nearly as comfortable, but a lot more affordable, and also available sooner.

Both campers will have you sleeping in the wet spot.

Unfortunately, the GFC will be from a water leak.

    Drifter gets all the girls.

I totally understand the financial situation. Really any of the campers are not an impulse buy so we look at it as an investment as well for you.

At VO we really want to earn your business so that you keep the camper for a very long time. The Drifter is built to last! It’s built with durability and flexibility in mind. No two people camp the same way, so the camper should enhance your experience not limit it.

Feel free to ask any questions, we will help answer or anyone with a Drifter can chime in. I love hearing how everyone sets up their camper as their home away from home.

Is the black finish an option? I don’t see it on the website.

Great input. Would love to see one of these in person. You have any brand ambassadors in San Diego?

The GFC fulfillment time is my biggest concern, but I should try and figure out exactly which product suits my needs better and go from there.

Can you share pictures of and explain a little bit of how it mounts to the bed? New to this product, but have heard/read a lot about the GFC.

It is! We’re updating the website. Powder coating comes with two options and two soon to be 3 standard colors.

The lower shell and lower roof/cabover of the camper is $1100 and the roof is an additional $400

We have white that matches stock, black and working on a standard grey.

That punches a little more than my budget, which would already be stretched to get the Drifter spec’d the way I’m interested. But it’s nice to know that it’s an option.

Are there any corosion or tarnishing issues with the bare finish?

It depends on where you live. If you live in an are where your vehicle is exposed to constant salt (corrosive environments) the powder coat is a huge plus at protecting your investment. You can leave it bare in those enviroments but recommend treating it every year like you would an aluminum boat. If you’re in an area like that, you’re probably already treating your truck and frame every year as well, so recommend hitting up a marine shop so you can source what works for you.

That being we use 5052 aluminum which has excellent Corrosion Resistance and is preferred in marine applications for that.

What about offering an anodized finish? Controlled oxidation that will then not corrode or require yearly maintenance as well as keeping the finish pretty much silver (OR FUN COLORS). I bet the cost of dipping a fully welded Drifter to anodize would be cost prohibitive.

It would be very expensive. There’s a lot of variables too like changing the welding rod so that the welded areas can anodize as well. The biggest thing is finding the facility that can dip the entire camper and roof!

So true. Mine took about ten minutes to get going today at -20°. Probably 7min to get the pilot lit and kept lit, and then another 3min for it to finally light the grid. It took long enough I hit the auto start on the truck thinking I’d need to hop in a warm up waiting for the Buddy heater to light.

So for anyone whom thinks the drifter is to heavy, well I climbed the steep rutted/moguls section at the mohave trail today with zero problems. Well not zero, I spun out about 3/4 of the way up. Wasn’t backing down, backed up about 2 feet gave her some beans to get the suspension to compress give me a bit if traction and pop the back end up up over the obstacke. Popped right over. The oic doesn’t do it justice.

Also the Afton water crossing, is fairly deep right now. My fenders are at 38-39”, the water was just below my hood line, there was no/lil bow wave as i could barely get traction and was floating a wee bit. I’d get traction lurch forward and up the. sink back down, then repeat. Not sure how the dash cam came out as ai was traveling into the sunand I wasn't going back to repeat it twice so I could setup a camera. Really need a drone for this. Anyways, I’d guess close to 43-45” deep, cant find my tape measure, i’ll find one and measure my truck tomorrow also had zero water inside, surprising.

Pic shows where the water was on the hood.

The crossing after I went thru. I recall there being 3 distinct ponds there was only two this time. The canyon part also has a fair amount of water in it as well.

Soda lake was the driest I have ever seen it. I was expecting to have to slog it thru after the water crossing!

Anyways, this taco can climb some steep narly terrain with the drifter and my fat ass in it and it also floats, so it can’t be that heavy!

She’s also my secret weapon for traction, attach her leash to the bumper and throw treats out front and we get thru 90% of the obstacles in neutral!

Not sure, probably starting to head back north tomorrow. Detour here and there, thinking Moab, then over to Oregon/Idaho for some hot spring action.
