Hey fellow open diff Taco owners. Anyone here modified their diffs to limited slip or lockers? I love my truck ('08 DCSB, SR5,MT,) but the next one's going to be OR.
Just wondering who's added something, like Detroit Tru Trac, or similar lsd.

True tracs are very popular, as are arb lockers. It depends on your needs, I wheel as much as possible so the arb fits better for me. I’ve never seen anyone complain about a true trac on the road. It also helps Offroad but has limits when a rear tire is completely off the ground.

I have a TrueTrac. Love it. I chanced the install by myself (with intent to drop it at a shop if needed) and miraculously the gears meshed exactly as they did before the install. I wouldn't recommend self install if you have never done gears before.

TrueTrac pro tip: if it won't "lock" both wheels, use the parking brake (since you are m/t) to build resistance and it should "lock".

I've also had the factory LSD and "aftermarket" TRD LSD (hard to find new) and I like the TrueTrac the best. The harder you push, the stronger the "lock" up. I quote lock because it doesn't truly lock. It binds itself together to drive both axles. That bind has a slip point but it is a much higher than any LSD.

I have a Truetrac on order. Im hoping it will work well with the 4Lo Trac mod (2015 Trd Sport).

I researched and read the sh*t out of all the options and went with the Truetrac because it suites my on-road needs as well as my off-road requirements. Also zero maintenance.

Love my trutrac best mod Ive done, works just like a open diff under normal use an kicks in when needed. No noise or jerking just earth rotating traction. By far no locker but it works for what I need it to. Wait for a ebay sale an can get a grest deal on one.

Also may wanna check out the yellow wire mod still reading up on it. To my limited comprehension allows trac control to work in 4l for non OR models.

Ya. I'm hoping it'll provide enough resistance via braking to lock up the Truetrac. No need to fiddle with the e brake. Ill know soon enough.... cant wait. The "auto LSD" is ridiculous.

Another vote for the trutrac, great replacement for my worn factory LSD.

Ya, had 2 in my Landcruiser, super awesome but open diff on road. The back end of Tacomas are so light I want something to aid traction for the street as well as off-roading.

Well if you are driving in snow, I don't care for the torsen diff(tru trac). What happens is you are driving in one wheel drive until that wheel loses traction. Then the other wheel kicks in and spins and your truck slides sideways and you leave off the gas. Then you step back on the gas and you have only one wheel drive. I had one in my 97 S-10 2 wheel drive pickup. I like a limited slip differential more because it always applies power to both rear wheels. This means less chance for wheel spin to start with.

Wow, that's the kind of info I'm interested in, besides the off reading info.

The Trutrac is a Limited Slip Differential. What I think you are referring to is a clutch based LSD. They work fine when new. Once worn they are useless and nobody bothers to rebuild one. They replace them with a Trutrac or a locker.

    I agree.
Had the truetrac in back of my ramcharger, in snow, on ice, in mountain switch back roads, offroad off camber and never had a problem.
Had one in the wife's 4runner with alot of icy mountain roads, never a problem.
The truetrac has helical worm style gears, as one tire slips the internal worm gear works it's way over to the other side creating an ease on set in traction to the opposite side. That's why it can have a 70%/30% or 50%/50% or 60%/40% in traction from one side to another. It's never harsh bais one side to the other.

I have a Detroit locker from ECGS and I really like it. It’s a little quirky on the road, but great offroad. Paired with 5.29 gears

I installed my Truetrac. It's awesome so far.
No drama on road and now both rear tires have grip. The power cut and flashing lights on the dash don't happen as easily or as often.

I'm sure it will be a huge asset off-road as well.

Pretty easy install, no extra shims needed on the carrier bearings. I just swapped the ring gear and pressed on new carrier bearings (Koyo of course).

Exact opposite of my experience. I had around 40k miles on the tru-trac in my old truck. It worked amazingly in the snow, 100% predictable. Fantastic on-road (dry pavement) manners, great off-road, and increased snow traction immensely.

I’ll get one for the rear of my ‘07, and probably and ARB for the front. That will fit my needs quite well.

Ps- my 07 is just an SR5, open diffs. I still have the tru trac from my ‘94, I don’t suppose that would fit, eh? The 8.4 vs 8” diff thing confuses me a bit.

Edit2: never mind above question, looked up part numbers and they’re different. Oh well!

Have a TrueTrac in my 07 TRD Sport, it definitely get's more traction than the factory clutch-type LSD did. I also swapped to an AWD transfer case and have a torsen up front. Can you tell me if this worked for you? I'm about to install the OR hydro brake booster to get A-TRAC for the same reason.

Woah. You have some serious mods there (and planned mods).

I haven't actually done the 4lo trac mod yet nor have I taken it off road as the Truetrac has only been installed for a couple of days. I'll post my findings once I have a chance to put it through its paces.
