Had this idea to buy a 3 gen taco from the local Copart and dismantle.

Anyone think this maybe a good idea to coordinate a group buy and distribute the parts?

...not that I have enough time to coordinate something like this :)

I tried something similar with a local group and it turned out to cost me too much time and money. People wanted shit but then backed out when I bought it with my own money. I didn’t buy a whole truck but had access to basically everything on it.

Would a running spreadsheet with members that need parts off certain models work?

Can't imagine this system would satisfy the instant gratification guys.

Some SR guys need parts off an OR, like an axle. Or, OR guys want TRD Pro parts, etc. Once enough of the spreadsheet fills to justify shopping and bidding.

I used to do this with old BMWs, it doesn't work well when the car is expensive.

There are generally not enough pro parts to make it worth it. You may get a grill, a headlight or taillight may be broken, so you can only sell one.. not many people will only need a single. Body panels are going to be a hard sell, most people have perfect panels already. Engine, trans and tcase are the same model wide, so that's wasted money. No one really needs a engine yet.
Interior stuff is generally a no sale. Shipping costs too much for seats.

It works with older cars and trucks where you only pay 1-2k for the whole thing, but can sell a blower motor for $200, diffs for $150, and body panels sell easy due to lots of rusted out cars rolling around.

I too did this with old BMW's (E30's exclusively) and agree with everything that you said above.

If anyone wants to list what they need/want off a 3rd gen, guess we could list here, if it gets crazy, then may move to some sort of spreadsheet.

I have an SR...all I am really looking for is a larger rear end, 8 to 8.5 is the upgrade I think.

Interior lower center console switch panel.

I have an OR without the tech package so I need switch slots for my heated seats. Going to put stock looking switches in.

Looks like they started repairing it and then said screw it. Front right headlight isn’t pro.

It's not worth the trouble because people are assholes. I use to sell a lot of used parts, but too many assholes expect you to ship shit for free. I'm supposed to go dumpster diving for boxes packing materials and hope I can find a few rolls of tape in the same dumpster. It got so bad on eBay that I just factored in the worst case scenario for shipping and added into the BIN price just so these assholes would have their free shipping.

Has anyone ever stopped to think about why salvage yards always have a few assholes working there? It's because asshole customers piss them off.

Yup and that reason is they're just making it look reasonable on the outside to flip it on Copart for a quick buck. I'm almost positive they didn't repair anything behind that front or rear bumper or fender and had no intention of making it anywhere near road worthy, especially with the certificate of destruction.

Here's the original Copart listing that shows the extent of the damage the "repair" is hiding. https://www.copart.com/lot/46407268/

That's crazy that they went to that extent! Whoever bought it must've gotten it cheap!
