Thats a good deal, how did you manage that? Was there a special, or was it the end of the year? And when you walked away and waited for them to come to you, did they initiate the price reduction, or were they just wiling to negotiate? Looking for advice on how to get the most out of a dealership.

On used ones at our local dealership you get lifetime powertrain. New ones only 5 years. Of course they are toyotas??? Either way demand lifetime oil change. And tire rotation. Demand tax, tag, and title. And when all else fails, respectfully demand a new hat.

I started with three dealers. Two of them asking for online quotes. Both of those dealers were worthless. Online has worked for me before though.
The third dealership had the truck I wanted in stock so that helped and it was a manual. That also helped.
It was the Toyota Thon in August.
Went in on a Sunday and test drove the truck and told them to work a deal.
They came back with a ridiculous price and I started to walk. Was asked what I would pay, told them 35. They said it would never happen, I walked.
Sales guy called me a few times over a couple weeks to see if I was still interested, said yes...at 35.
Week or so later he called back and said ok, come in and sign papers.

You can’t get emotional and have to be willing to walk.
If you can get two dealers on the hook even better, start working them against each other.
Personally I hate the back and forth.
But dealers will try to hit a home run on every deal if you let them.

    Edit
If you plan on trade in, work the deal on the new truck first. At the end add the trade. That way they can’t hide any money on your trade.

It's a crap shoot buying used. Not knowing how the prior owner treated the truck.

Meh i wouldn't lose sleep over the trucks past, it’s a Tacoma not a Mustang... 98% of owners don’t even use the 4wd. You’ll be fine with a CPO Truck, 7 year 100,000 warranty’s on most. Possibly Saving 7-10 grand is a no brainer, look over it and drive it and you’ll be fine. Many many people have traded in unmolested Tacoma’s.

I was in a very similar situation in late 2017. I found, just like you, that the price for a lightly used Tacoma (especially a 4x4) is only a grand or two less than brand new. I initially wanted a used TRD, but ended up going to a 4x4 SR5. My advice, like many other contributors, is to go new. A manual SR5 and manual TRD sport, aren't vastly different, and you would save a couple thousand by going to an SR5. Best of luck!

My new 2018 DCOR was 34k out the door and the same dealer had used Tacoma’s for about the same prices. Wasn’t a hard choice for me and I went looking to buy a used one.

respectfully, you just won't find 7-10 grand off a used tacoma with 25-40K miles.

I wouldn’t be afraid of the used one that you mentioned with the 10k difference from the new one you found. Let someone else take the new depreciation hit. They hold value but there is depreciation. Make sure to double check the book value on the used one your looking at to ensure a fair price. Another thing to do is run the value on the new one your looking at just throw 20k on the mileage and double check the depreciation from new.

I bluebooked that same scenario and the new one trade in was 28k private party 31-33.

Running the used 2016 it looks like their asking is spot on and it will be worth the same the minute you leave the lot, so the used might be the better buy in this case if you want instant equity, if you don’t mind waiting the new one should align in a couple of years. The good thing is with the 2016 if you don’t like it you won’t lose anything selling it.

I have a very hard time recommending buying a lightly used Tacoma. The price difference between new and used is so minimal...

Could you speciifically quote what's changed other than tsb flash updates, tss (which most don't want anyway), rear sliding etc. I know of a few minor part numbers changed but I'm interested in these myths I keep hearing becoming factual with real data other than chat on boards.

When I was looking about 2 years ago, I couldn't really save enough money to make it worth the difference buying used. I could save less than $1K (if that), buying one with less than 10K miles and might be able to save $2,500 for one about to go outside of the 36K warranty. It wasn't worth it to me and I went new.

I'm like most others in here... couldn't justify buying used even though I was planning on it at first.

Are you financing or paying cash? You'll definitely get a better rate on a new truck.

There is nothing worse in the world then buying cars. Homes, jewelry, clothing, anything really. Car salesman are the worst. God bless them though

Got my ‘16 Tacoma ORDC 4x4 Automatic for $30500 + TTTL had 19k on it in May...best I found then was $34500 + TTTL. Been back and forth about the deal but this fit my budget and been great so far.

The depreciation is just not there to buy used. Go ahead and buy new.
