You can buy those stickers from a dealer, or even Amazon. So the stickers alone don’t mean it has the TRD pakage... you can do a VIN lookup to see what exactly your truck came with from the factory. I forget the link, but search around, you’ll find it.

Of course stickers can be purchased. I was suggesting that he provide a link to the mentioned VIN decoder that has the ability to differentiate TRD from non-TRD trucks.

Not true. My aunt bought a brand new 2003 tacoma from the dealer. TRD prerunner double cab 3RZ with no elocker. Window decal stated TRD OR.

My dad's 98 prerunner TRD OR didn't have an elocker as well.

Yes some 4cyl TRD 1st gens were made without the elocker...rare (at least nowadays) but they exist

This is what I remember, only for 01-04, all TRD V6 Prerunners came with e-lockers. 01-04 4cyl TRD Prerunners were the only ones found without an e-locker, so I've heard, I've never actually seen one in person.

The truck didn't have the sticker on it when bought it, just the paint faded around where it was taken off. He told me it was a TRD package, yet didn't have an elocker and he took the sticker off because it was old and looked bad. I'll run the VIN tomorrow and post results.

I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota sold more prerunners than 4x4. Surprised they dropped the name for 3rd gen

Here in Southern CA they definitely did...I'm noticing way more 4x4s nowadays since the 3rd gen came out, but that's probably got a lot to do with the 'overland' trend that's blown up in the past few years. But yeah overall there are way more Prerunners/2WDs out here.

Most of the rest of the country though, even middle to Northern CA...it's predominately 4x4 Tacomas. I've talked to people in the midwest and East coast that didn't even realize Toyota made 6lug 2wd trucks, even though they've been doing it since the late 90's. The southwest is the only area where Prerunners are more common that 4x4s I think.

Pre runners are what they use for racing Baja. More streamline, less parts, and absorb bumps much better than a 4x4 at higher speeds due to physics and limitations of a front differential

Though Toyota uses that name to market their pre runner pickup since it’s rwd with heavier duty 4x4 components.

And YES they did make pre runners with rear locking diffs. And yes you can do nasty donuts and power slides with the rear locker :)
