Iranian widow faces being stoned to death in days

Human rights groups, government officials and celebrities are appealing to Iran to halt death-by-stoning plans for a convicted adulterer.
The execution of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, 43, who has already spent five years in prison and received 99 lashes for alleged adultery, would "disgust and appall the watching world", the British Government declared, according to a Thursday report in U.K. newspaper The Times.
New York-based Human Rights Watch said Iran should stop Ashtiani's and all death sentences.
"Death by stoning is always cruel and inhuman, and it is especially abhorrent in cases where judges rely on their own hunches instead of evidence to proclaim a defendant guilty," said Nadya Khalife, Middle East women's rights researcher at Human Rights Watch in a statement on its website. "Iran should immediately put a stop to this execution – and all executions."
Celebrities signing up to campaign for Ashtiani's release include Sir David Hare, the playwright, actress Emma Thompson, actress Juliette Binoche, fashion designer Katherine Hamnett and actor Colin Firth, The Times said.
Even American jail-bound actress Lindsay Lohan got in on the act. On Twitter, she posted a series of messages about the "cruel and inhuman" punishment and linked to a Wednesday Newsweek story about Ashtiani.
The Newsweek story said Ashtiani could be buried up to her breasts and stoned to death as early as this coming weekend.

Some things are just wrong. It's not like we are outraged that some countries eat pig testicles or something. This is a human being who is imprisoned, and tortured, and will ultimately be executed for having a relationship after her husband died.

It's basically the international equivelant of calling the police because your neighbor is beating his wife. you could just as easily say "it's not my business", but MOST people intervene out of compassion and the knowledge that it's not acceptable to treat other humans in that manner. if we could call the police on Iran we would, but unfortunately, the US is as close to the police as the world has.

A friend of mine immigrated from Iran. I also work with someone who immigrated from Iran. It is very interesting to speak with them and ask questions about that country. From what I am told, the people there are very nice, its their corrupt government that is the problem. Many Iranians wish that the U.S. would strike, even though innocent civilians would die, so that they could escape the wrath of the current regime.

My biggest problem with the case with this woman is that she didn't speak much Farsi. As a result, she obviously did not get a fair trial.

 

Who's to say she didn't actually cheat on her husband?
They got out a whip, and whipped her back 100 times and she finally screamed out in pain that she cheated. She could have said that so she wouldn't get whipped anymore.
She later took back her statement, saying she did not in fact cheat.

Their laws are so f*cked up, I hate it when people say that our system is screwed (It's not perfect), but it is nothing near their system of justice. I'm glad we don't whip someone on their back, until they admit to something they didn't do.

But, maybe she did cheat, but it does not justify a stoning till death. Sick people in the head....

 

Her husband is dead. she's accused of cheating on a dead man. Apparently, the women over there are required to be faithful to their husband's even after death.

The death penalty was handed down on the basis of "judge's knowledge" – a loophole that allows for subjective judicial rulings where no conclusive evidence is present. An absolute travesty!

1)No it's not equivalent at all- In this country the laws are written such that beating your wife isn't allowed. If you are stupid enuf to do it and get caught- Cops should be called. Over there the law says once you are married- That's it...No other dudes. She broke that law-She pays the price.

It's the way the law is written- If that's a problem for the people who lives there- They need to organize and make changes...just like here. It's not our job to get some other countries shit in one sock when ours is barely holding together....

 

Sorry, but with wealth comes responsibility... To at least say something would be good - more than placating the Middle East to make Muslims feel better about themselves.

 

If they don't like it they should just organize and change it? Do you think that they haven't tried to organize to make changes? Many of them were killed for it. Most of them like being alive more than they dislike being oppressed. Plus they aren't just fighting the government. They would be fighting the Islamic leaders and thousands of years of ignorance. You're just lucky you were born in a country where you don't have to worry about backwards ass religion dictating every facet of your life.

You act like we are pushing for military intervention. All, I'm saying is we should be outraged, and the fact that there are people who are putting pressure on them and protesting for this woman is a good thing. People would probably be calling for an embargo, but they are already facing sanctions for their nuclear activities and that hasn't deterred them.
