Tdi motor in a Tacoma

Has anyone ever swapped a tdi motor in a their wheeling rig?
I heard you can do a lot to them to get more power and they are fairly cheap

 

I would stick with reliable over power. If you want power, do a LS3 or 2UZ swap.

 

The 1.9 TDIs are reliable and easy to modify. They can easily produce more horsepower and close to twice the torque of the 2.7l.

 

There have been a few. I seem to remember there being swap parts for those motors. I'm doing an Lm7. I say, do the TDI and let us know how it runs

 

Uh, you know TDI motors are notorious for going 500k+?

 

Same for toyota engines as well. It comes down to owner maintenance and care that will be the judgment of any engine

 

IF he has the space to lay out the work, the tools to do the fab work with, the skills to use the tools, connections at machine shops for any complex fabrications at a reasonable rate and good sources for all the parts needed.

Miss any one of those and the overall price / time starts to quickly rise.

I'm not trying to be discouraging, just realistic. Many ground breaking builds wind up being a steaming pile, but usually because the builder grossly underestimated one or more of these areas.

 

Only the meticulously maintained which costs $1000 to $3000 a year.

IMHO 'I heard' is almost always the tell tale phrase that means it won't happen. But I was wrong once in a couple years ago, so maybe I'll be wrong again.........

holy hell this is wrong.

10k oil changes, fuel filters every 20k, air filters every 40k, and timing belts every 100k.

I have a BRM TDi i daily and it's the cheapest car ever, these are notorious for cam wear btw, but i haven't had any issues at 190k miles. I just put a new clutch and timing belt in it for $1200, that was including me buying the tools to do it and labor.

i'm fairly sure my car was neglected and that's the first timing belt it's had, also the clutch wasn't slipping however the Dual Mass flywheel they come with factory was failing so i went to a single mass flywheel.

someone in canada has a mount kit, has a working system for the ac and is working on the automatic switchboard.

 

Depends on how many miles you drive. I only drive my truck about 10k a year, but I still change my oil and air filter every 3-4 months. Probably costs me about $300 bucks a year and thats overkill for maintenance. Change coolant every 50k also. Not much cost for preventative maintenance. 1k-3k might be what you pay if you DON'T maintain it.

 

I must hear all the horror stories then.

 

they're cheap to maintain. change the oil yourself and they're no more than a camry to change the oil.

I’m actually all for the TDI swaps and have had way more professional experience with them then I’d care to admit. The PD engines do have a know can lobe issue but mostly at higher mileage (usually around 200k) unless they’ve been pourly maintained. Also the ALH and CR TDI’s are pretty stout. All make excellent power, ALH’s being the lowest and the CR’s are the highest but they’re untapped resource. The biggest thing is to go through the engines before doing the swap, clean al the carbon out and delete all the emissions garbage off of them. All the carbon build up is what wears them out and causes stuff to fail.

 

Talked about this with a jeep friend and they are installing one this coming year.

 

Hpa motor sports make just about everything you need to swap a VW TDI into a Jeep. I bet they could help a guy with the electrical part of this. They are pretty cool folks and big into off-roading. Plus they build wicked cool/fast Vw's.
