Sound Deadener Recommendations

I started by doing the back wall and under the rear seats, but I didn't notice much. Then I did the rear doors and I felt like I noticed a little change. When I finally finished deadening both front doors was when I felt a huge shift. The last thing I did was the roof and floor which I can say made the truck a lot more quiet, but mostly it cleaned up the mid bass and bass in my audio system.

I still need to put MLV in the doors and fix the rear vent noise, but all in all it's sounding really good. I spent a lot more than $250 on the material though.

I like what you say about regret though. If you are picky enough to go through all the pain of sound-proofing your ride you will have regrets along the following.

• What if I had done?
• What if I had covered?
• Should I have done?
• Do I need to do more?
• Should I have used a different material?

It's just part of being detail oriented I guess. I'm going to rattle proof this Taco even if I die trying!

...has everything you will ever need. They explain every aspect of sound deadening and have albums for various cars. I have no relation to the company but did purchase their entire kit for my 2017 WRX. It is not cheap, but it does the job better than anything else.

Even if you're not buying, they are a great learning resource.

 

I don't think it matters who makes the stuff so much as you get the correct materials & apply them properly. The whole vendor debate is part product, part price & part illusion.

 

Absolutely. It is a very simple concept, but I don't think there are many places that provide the right info. Most people tend to think you cover your car in Dynamat and that's the best you can do. This site is just a great resource that tells you exactly what you need and why, if you want to do it the best way possible.

This site has many of the same/similar components for what looks to be solid numbers and the ability to pick up in person on the west coast or other locations. They are catering more to the commercial building installs, but they still have MLV bonded to CCF for a fraction of the cost of Second Skin. Anyone have any feed back on this insulation company?

 

Mostly true given the topic. I will note however that the company mentioned above (SDS) is the only one I know of who skips the 'illusion' part and makes the best parts at reasonable prices. People here seem to care more about low prices.

This is a science - physics to be precise. There's no voodoo. Yes, most vendors are completely full of it, and that's why I prefer to buy from the only one that isn't when I can. Err, I've had nothing but good experiences with TMSoundproofing and Foam by Mail also but they live outside the typical car audio go-tos.

Although similarly priced, these guys don't pick up the shipping on rolls like TMSoundproofing does...so a 25 foot roll of MLV costs $80 to ship! They don't say if their materials are recycled or virgin either. Without any word from them, I'm going to assume it's recycled.

 

I feel like the cost of the materials is nothing compared to the cost of labor... Even if it's your own labor... Doing a proper deadening job takes a long time.

 

Oh it's hella time consuming. I'd hate to see the bill to have someone do it correctly

 

Does anybody know how many sq/ft they used on the inside of a double cab? per door and floor/back wall?

 

I'm mobile right now, but if you check out sound deadener showdown and choose the Tacoma DC package they add the approximate amount to your cart. Should be able to figure it out there.

 

Yeah I looked there. Looks like he has 85.5 sq/ft of MLV... does that sound about right to you guys who have done it?

 

I'd think again about using tiles on the rear wall. They're really hard to install because of the corrugation. I'd use sheets there instead.

 

You don't need full coverage with CLD... 25% coverage is generally enough

 

Also, take note that the 3/4" melanmine is on back order under mid March. Had to take advantage of the 20% off Christmas sale at Second Skin. Sound deadner show down would have been my 1st choice, but timeline is a ways out there.

 

Regardless, the foil on the tiles is so thick it makes it hard to apply to the ribbed surface.

 

Here's what I have... hopefully I can find the time to tackle this soon. I'm still debating on if I am going to do the ceiling but I can always do it after everything else is done and back together

Yeah, that is a wait. Usually though if they're out of something they'll discount your order if they're out...if you can wait it out. I bought a couple boxes of CLD tiles last time they were out of stock - got 10 or 20% off...forget which. SDS hardly ever puts anything on sale; I had to.

 

Yeah, it looked like just the out of stock items are discounted @20%, which is a nice savings. But the melamine is one of the key items in the sound reduction, and I don't want to do this job more than once. Second skin's 20% off the order netted out to a $300 plus savings....had to do it. Also, it was delivered in 2 days. That's a great turn around.
