Is the 4790 devils canyon or something like that. I've been wanting one to Delid and drop it in place of my 4770k. I think it can be done I read with a bios upgrade.

Yeah. The 4790k is basically a 4770k with better voltage regulator and supposedly better thermal compound. I was able to OC to 4.8GHz on air without delidding.

I'm at 4.6GHz on this 4770k on air.
You think 5.0GHz stable on the 4790k, delidded is achievable?

Definitely possible. Seems most people at 5GHz are water cooled, delidded or not. I'm using a Noctua DH-15, which is a beefy air cooler. This thread on OC.net has a good chart of everyone's settings for their OC.

Modifying a Dell Optiplex 7010 MT for my dad, it has 12 GB of RAM (I'm assuming it's 3 sticks of 4GB, I think I have an extra stick of 4GB that will bring the MoBo to the 16GB max) and a I7 3770 for CPU.
We're trying to decide between a 1050-TI and a RX 570 for GPU as he will be using it from slight simulators, and X-Plane is both CPU and GPU intensive, and he may end up running multiple monitors.
The 1050-TI is $5 cheaper but the RX 570 performs 19.9% better on benchmark.

Looking just at that it's an easy choice but if we get the 570 we need to upgrade the PSU and change the case, $45 for the PSU and $30 for the case (the case essentially cost $0 though, the old case would need $30 in a caddy and adapter for the SSD we are adding).

So I guess what it comes down to is, Is it worth $50 to go from a 1050-TI to RX570 and have the nicer case, as well as PSU, in your opinion?

My answer is to lurk until you find a RX580 for only 20-30 dollars more than the RX570. It can be done and a RX580 is a really good 1080p GPU that runs with the 1060 in terms of performance.

Upgrade the PSU. You probably have a 5-6 year PSU in that Dell box and that’s roughly when PSUs start to rapidly degrade as the capacitors in the cheaper OEM PSUs wear out, you’ve likely already lost 20-30% of the original wattage of the PSU due to age. You don’t want to damage your upgrades with a power supply failure.

We were about to get a 570 when we happened upon a used 580 for $20 more, so we started looking at more 580’s and found one for only $15 more than the 570 so we went ahead and got it.

Also got a modular 530 watt PSU, not a whole lot of headroom but we shouldn’t be overdrawing it.

If you’re getting at least 450 watts actual on the 12v rail that’s more than enough for a 3770k and a RX580. That’s only about 220ish watts worth of chips and the rest of the stuff in the box won’t draw more than 100ish watts of power.

    Yeah.
I'll have to check, but I may have a 4790 in the closet not being used (can't remember if 4770 or 4790). Let me know if you want me to look.

No way you hit 5.0 ghz on a 4770k without deliding and winning the silicon lottery. Did you prime95 your 4.6 ghz overclock? Even that is a pretty high OC for that chip across all cores.

I ran prime 95, Intel burn in and every other cpu intensive prog. stable and never had a single issue. As soon as I go to 4.7, trouble begins.

I’d say you already hit the silicon lottery unless you want to punish your delid and punish your voltage.

What voltage are you running now? From what I've read about 4.5 ghz is the 90% cutoff. I mean 4.6 and 4.7 are out there but your chip is either well binned or your at 1.3 or above volts.

Exactly why I didn't want to Delid mine. I wanted to practice on another one. Specifically a devils canyon.

All I have to do from what I read is a bios upgrade on my z87, even though they are both 1150's, I don't think it will run without the upgrade.

Can't remember off hand, I'm 700 miles away from the comp.

Edit: as far as I can remember, I never bumped it.

My 4790K runs well at 4.7 GHz. It's even stable at 4.8GHz, but the bump in voltage and the resulting heat means it's tough to keep temps in check during the summer.

    For sure I'd be interested.
    If it's a 4770k, then I'll Delid mine knowing I have a backup.
    If it's a 4790, I'd Delid that and maybe get it 4.8-5.0.
My computer room is 72 ambient and I run a h100i closed loop system.

That’s how overclocking most chips works. At some point you end up feeding more voltage into the CPU than it can handle, either heat wise or worse. Ryzen is the exception. It locks up before it hits its max thermals because it’s fairly unoptimized.

I had my 4770k clocked at 4.7ghz for years, never gave me issues other than it sometimes hit up to 80c on tests but it was stable. heat is the only issues with intel chips, play with the voltage and they are golden. I think I had mine at 1.35 or around that.

That seems a bit high in voltage. I think my 4790K is at 4.7GHz on 1.285v. I think I had to hit 1.31+ to get 4.8GHz stable.
