Next gen tundra...Thoughts?

Just like how these big companies make their employees sign no compete agreements. A lot of these agreements are 2 years. A company like Toyota doesn’t want its employees with valuable information to be able to go to GM and start sharing that sensitive info. They do everything they can to protect themselves and all the money they’ve spent and could potentially suffer.

 

The big three can afford discounts because they have huge economies of scale. They have the best selling vehicles in America by a large margin. The GM twins and the F-series both sell 3-4 times more than the Camry and RAV4, which are best selling non-trucks in America.

Huge volume plus body-on-frame manufacturing (which is cheaper), does a lot better in explaining the Domestic discounts than your explaination—that the domestics purposely make lower quality vehicles with planned obsolescence.

Quit making shit up, I didn't. Economy of scale lol. They are all global companies man, not separate companies by region. Just read the links and maybe you will understand just how big Toyota really is.

 

Yall need to google EPA 2025 mpg sometime. Change is coming, and its coming as a 25% increased fuel economy across the board. Like it or not, there are going to be a lot of big changes over the next 6 years.

Obama's was something stupid like 54.4 mpg required or something ridiculous. 25% really isn't a huge bump but I have a feeling we are going to see either some really innovative tech, or some really bad shifting transmissions in the near future.

Yea he wanted them to have a combined average across their entire fleet of 54.4 which is nuts. For most of the manufacturers it’ll probably just mean focusing on the vehicles at the bottom end that is dragging their numbers down. If Toyota can bump the tundra into the 20s, that would have a huge impact on their average. I still think your right though that we will see more and more gears in our automatics in the future.

 

I just travelled 750 miles in cold weather and my tundra display said 16.8 mpg.

 

I used to have a 2010 tundra and never saw those numbers. Kudos to those that do but I averaged about 13-14. If I had a heavy trailer then I would get about 10 mpg.

I said two specific platforms F-series and serria/Silverado have better economies of scale due to their volume.

Heres a lesson on gross margin.

Gross margin = Revenue per unit less direct labor - direct materials - manufacturing overhead .

Standard cost = BOM (bill of materials) = allocation direct labor , direct materials and overhead per unit.


Gross margin per unit = revenue per unit - less standard cost per until.

Cost include:
Labor used for manufacturing
Materials used per unit
Machine cost per unit
Inventory write downs
Overhead related to manufacturing
Significant re-work
Manufacturing variance

Cost don’t include:
Research and development,
General administration
Sales and marketing

More than likely the financial statements of ford report fixed costs directly related to the F150, and variable costs directly related to the f150 to offset revenue directly related to the f150. The information is reported in aggregate but the assumption is that aggregate number can be broken down into that detail.



So Ford has fixed manufacturing costs allocated to the F150 plus Variable costs per unit produced


So the total F150 GRoss margin= price per unit * units sold - variable costs per unit * units sold - Fixed costs, which is supposed to be achieved by standard cost allocation.

Since fixed costs are fixed in the short term we can consider them to be a constant or..

X = units sold
R = revenue
C = fixed costs
VC = variable costs

F150 product line Gross margin = RX - VX - C

I think it’s obvious to see here that profit per unit actually increases with volume. Or economies of scale.

This has nothing to do global r&d costs, global market cap, or stock price.

Ford, Toyota and GM have 100s of different product lines with 100s of different gross margins. It’s the aggregation of all these different Gross margins that are offset by global operating costs like R&D,GA and marketing.


Thanks to the volume of the F150 product line, and the lower average costs of Body-on-frame manufacturing vs. unibody, the domestics can afford to discount units. They can also afford expensive tweaks like an all aluminum body, multiple engine platforms and a raptor variant, which a lower volume platform like the Ranger or Tacoma cannot.

 

Anything can be worst or best in class if you spin the numbers right. It's all marketing and cherry picking data.

Toyota is in no rush to update the tacoma. The "tacoma killers" have arrived and Toyota is selling more trucks than ever...

 

If they do Hydrogen that would be groundbreaking.

And, highly explosive... unless they find a way to freeze the H fuel cell before it could ignite in a wreck
