It's less Tacoma and more mod
The AT has different gear ratios and a torque converter, the shift points aren't at all comparable. Plus even the rear end gears are different between the models, there isn't enough crossover here to really compare them

Hit the nail on the head right here. However, the general consensus here seems to be aimed around 2-2.5k which I can agree with.

Sound/feel as well. I usually run 1 - 4, then onto 6. I'd guess most shifts are under 2500 though.

    Beats me. :notsure:

My first two trucks had no tachometer, so that’s how I learned to drive w/o one. The next truck with MT had a tach but I never found myself looking at it much.

It just depends on the driving situation. Speed, terrain, etc were all more relevant to me than RPM.

I agree with most. Whatever the conditions require. However, I don’t think I shift below 2000-2500 very often. Pulling a loaded trailer..... probably around 4000 for the first few gears anyways!
Somewhere between 2-3000 rpm depending on speed seems to match well and ya can skip using the clutch too ;)

The best way to shift for economy is to install an old fashioned vacuum gauge. Works with any transmission type.

It's great for certain engine diagnostics as well.

All you shift by ear folks. 'Ear' is great if you are all by your lonesome. Sometimes 'feel' works after you and the vehicle become 'one' under repetitive conditions, like a work commute.

But if you've never run with open headers and another vehicle beside you, or in an SCCA or HPDE with a helmet on a glance at the tach or a tach light is your friend. Know that's not the normal Tacoma situation, but the point is using instrumentation isn't all bad.

I shift wherever I feel like most of the time. I prefer to hear my engine roar a lot so I’ll shift between 4000 and redline at least a few times a day. I probably shift on average at 2500.

I have been having some fun trying to hyper mile my Tacoma though. I have found the sweet spot for mpgs without lugging is just below 1500rpm cruising. I’ll shift and rev match very quickly at 1600 to 1900 depending on what gear I’m in to rev match to my cruising speed rpm below 1500.

My typical mpg city is about 14 for a tank, but when I’m having a bit too much fun I can go even lower:)
When I do my 1500rpm thing in the city I can get 20+mpg on a trip and usually 18 on a tank.

AT doesn't have the option of shifting as well though ? The S mode doesn't shift gears as you tell it to, it limits them. For example if you are in S4 the transmission will only go as high as 4th gear, S5 would limit to 5rh gear, and so on.

Lugging is making the engine labor in too high a gear under it's load (payload or slopes, slow traffic ect.). Why shift at screaming rpm? It's not good for the vehicle or pleasant for passengers. There is rarely a good reason for that unless merging from a stand still from a short ramp or evasive actions. When you drive a manual for a while you can shift by sense and reflex without thinking much about it. I find I'll be driving home from work in 4th at about 1600 rpm or so and say "wow that engine is in it's sweet spot. " Speed limit is 35mph. Other times, I'll do it in 6th with no problem. I have the 4.0L by the way. I have written before that I smelled burning clutch in 6th up a long hill with a smallish load in the bed. It didn't seem to be lugging but the clutch though otherwise. You learn the character of your vehicle after a while. That's why they give us all the gears. Three used to be enough....
