have a 2017, never been off road, yeah i know.. BSM starting giving an error the other day so took it to dealer. the dealer had my truck for 6hrs then sent me a text that they found a scuff... and we are talking a scuff that might happen from a shopping cart and that was damage that caused sensors to need calibration and that the calibration would cost 1086.90!

I flabbergasted, told the guy.. no accident .. nothing.. not even a minor fender bender.. thing just stopped working the other day. he was a complete jerk and told me the scuff is proof of damage and will not budge?

anyone every hear of similar swindle? seems so incredibly shady.

Shoot, that sucks! Mine went out after a trip to the beach. The only similarities in our stories is that it took 6 hours to fix. No charge though.

Seems like a ripoff honestly, maybe go to a different dealer and see what they say as far as price goes

Go to another dealer and leave reviews that let everyone know about your experience with Dealer #1.

sounds like you just found that dealer's True Colors. Open a case with Toyota and ask for a rep to come look at the truck.1-800-331-4331

I guess that my only option? Issue is I’ve never seen nor noticed the scuff he is talking about.. and I look at it everyday!

So I’ll have to see tomorrow what kind of a scuff it is.

He told me on the phone that just standing on the bumper to firmly can do this! No sh$$t.. his words. Just climbing on the bumper can disable this system

Call the customer experience line and open up a case and or try a different dealer.

I would call or text them back with a simple message: 'Thanks for your time, I'll open a case with corporate and let them take a look.'

I suspect you'll get a quick callback but I wouldn't let them touch my truck after something like that.

Some bastard bumped my bumper in the parking lot and my sensors work fine...

Go look at your truck and inspect the "damage" for yourself. I'm not going to say his story is impossible, but you should always verify what they say.

Anyhow, playing devil's advocate... the service department can't just warranty the work if it did come in damaged. They get audited and will suffer greatly if they're doing warranty work that shouldn't be done

There’s literally no sign of damage.. just a scuff mark.

He also said it could be disabled by stepping on the bumper... I get the devils advocate if I came in with damage that was visible but.. no.. just a failed sensor.

In that case call corporate and they will open a case number. In my experience, Toyota is quick to call out corporate reps for warranty approval. They have the final say.

If the rep says they can't do it, it won't get done no matter what dealership you go to. Post pics of the damage they're talking about if you can

I’ll post pictures tomorrow.. drove home
In a corolla.. lol.. good thing I live an hours drive away from dealer.

Thanks for replies.. i was wondering if this was a dealer specific issue or a sensor thing.. sounds definitely dealer specific or at least suspect at this point.

Haha at least they gave you a rental! But yeah just take it easy and wait to see what corporate says. You mentioned before that stepping on the bumper could cause failure? That's bullshit, unless you're like 450lbs

Oh man, you left that part out. Let me ask you this. As a tech, how would you like to have to clean out horseshit just so you could troubleshoot it? I'd tell you to take a leap as well.

You should have cleaned it out before you took it in. It's not their job to clean your (horse's) shit up.

WELL.....looks like you have $1086.90 towards a nice legit rear bumper since you don't have to worry about BSM anymore :D
