Just got the ECU update done during my 10k service at Toyota of Riverside (California). I had a printed copy of the TSB and told the service rep about RPM dead spots and surges. They confirmed the issue and did the update (confirmed in paperwork). The RPM dead spot and surging issues have definitely improved with the update. Shifting from first to second and second to third feels a lot better and smoother now without the RPM dead spots. As others have said, it doesn't feel perfect, but it does feel better. Definitely worth getting done.

Yeah, after reading these threads, it makes me look for problems that may not be there and may just be in my head.

I have a 19 manual too. No issues with lack of power either. Getting onto the highway is a breeze, even at 50% throttle through the gears, it pulls pretty hard for a vehicle this size.

From looking at the files, and using techstream on vehicles. '19s do not have an update to them that I am aware of. They have yet another new code which is not in any of the files provided on this issue to date. My initial guess would be the software for the 19s incorporates what was changed on the 16-18.

You have the new tune probably. If you had the old tune, you would know exactly what other folks are talking about

The M/T calibration has come a long way since 04B10. I bought my truck in October 2015, and IMHO the tuning was terrible. Since then we've had 04B11, 04B12, 04B13 for 16/17, and 04A70/04A71 for '18. Not even sure what the '19 cal is called lol.

I have one of the earliest '19s and I don't think it is too bad, but I have seen hints of some of the issues others have posted around here.

    - Sudden surge in power around 3000 RPMs or so occasionally when accelerating. Since I usually shift around then anyway, unless I'm accelerating hard I don't run into it too often.
    - Stumble (sudden loss of power) once or twice has happened usually when downshifting 3rd to 2nd or 2nd to 1st. Almost stalls/bogs out.

When I first got it I pulled the cal ID using OBD Fusion app and posted it here, but that was a little while back now and don't remember it offhand. I have ~2200 miles on mine now.

It would be interesting to see if you guys that just got your '19s have an updated ECU cal ID compared to mine, since I do see some of the symptoms still.

When did you buy yours, and do you know when the date of manufacture was?

I'm curious too. How do I verify my ECU cal ID?

Interesting you mention that. I've actually been in the market for a 3rd gen since December of last year and I test drove one of the late production 2017 models. It was a TRD Sport 4x4. I felt the truck drove kind of rough, had a lot of road noise, and I wasn't in love with it. On top of that, the rear-view mirror was too low and obstructed my view. Those two things made me walk away.

Fast forward a year later, and after I read that they made the rear-view mirror height adjustable, I went in for another test drive. I drove a 2019 TRD Sport 4x4. I swear it felt like a completely different vehicle. The road noise was gone. The transmission was butter-smooth. The last time I remember one that smooth was a 2006 Mazda RX-8 that I test drove 12 years ago. The steering felt better. The engine felt like it had more power too. It drove like a Lexus.

I was hooked at that point and was settled on getting a 2019.

Ok, After 1 year and 20k of driving my stuttering 2017 TRD Sport, I had the dealer finally do my software upgrade yesterday. I had scheduled routine 20k maintenance for yesterday (south of Boston). I came loaded with the TSB 0058-18 on my iPad and all other info I needed (from this thread). I also brought in the service case paper from March that "diagnosed" the problem about 10k miles ago. Their senior service tech had gotten in the truck (with a connected tech laptop) and we drove around hard on both local and highway roads. He drove it and I drove it and his software clearly showed the skipping and surging under power. He wrote up a case #, but after calling the factory he reported that they said the standard BS about it operating within normal parameters. He said he was fairly sure they knew about the problem but they weren't going to address it yet. Hopefully in the future there would be a fix. At least he was honest with me. From this thread, it was exactly as I had expected.

This time, with all the new information in hand, I scheduled the service for yesterday. It was interesting that after about a half hour from taking my truck, the service coordinator came out and said "good news, they're doing the update" (I was thrilled). Then another half hour later he came out and said "bad news, I spoke too soon, they decided they can't do the upgrade, it's for AT's only". Of course I'm pissed now. Then he came out again with "the original senior tech just arrived and over-rode the other guys and is doing the upgrade.

In summation, I got the software done and instantly as I pulled on the highway I could feel the difference. Was it 100% perfect? No, but it's damn close. The acceleration is way smoother from bottom to top and when I get on it to pass a car, the stuttering is gone. I'm extremely happy with the outcome and feel it was worth the aggravation to push the issue and make it all happen. Finally, I love driving the truck again.

Ordered in July, built on 9/18, and picked up around the end of September.

To get the ID you need a OBDII reader and an app like OBD Fusion or I think Carista can get it as well now.

edit: Dug through my older posts to find the ECU Cal ID I had found previously on my '19 and it was "8966304B4000", which would be shortened to 04B40 generally I think. Hopefully someone with a newer '19 can see if it matches or has been updated since then.

I picked up my ‘19 MT Pro over the weekend I’m a little concerned at how hard it is to get the shifter all the way to the left to get into reverse. Is this something that gets easier as it gets broken in?

    Do you even lift, bro?

Yes, it gets broken in a bit.

Haha, yes, it definitely gets easier. My wife tried driving my truck off the lot, and couldn't get it into reverse at all, so, I ended up driving it home. Now, 2k miles later, she's able to easily get it into reverse without issue. It's still a stiff push into reverse, but much easier than it originally was. :D

Anyone else getting errors trying to open techstream? keep getting error messages about missing files. I used WinRAR to unpack.

I just recently picked up a 19 sport with M/T. Haven’t experienced any issues at all so far. Truck runs great for what it is. Shifts nice and smooth. Had it on the PA Turn Pike and never had to shift it out of sixth gear. Pulled every grade with out issue using cruise control.

Read a post where somebody said they had problems driving around a parking lot in second gear. I’ve done it a lot without a problem.

that's amazing to hear, actually. the issues before were just nuts. sounds like they finally got it right on the 19's.

Im quite pleased with the way it runs so far after doing a lot of reaserch on them. Very first Tacoma. I didn’t go into it thinking I could just sit there and boil the tires off it. Not that type of truck. I understand the complaints with the auto trans and never considered an auto. We like to shift our own gears.

No problem on my end. Make sure you have the latest version of WinRAR, or 7Zip installed.

If it still doesn't work, I can provide you with a personal download location.
