What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I'm pretty sure if either of your trucks fell off stands they would still be tall enough not to crush you without wheels on. I'm always a bit uneasy under the Z, cause I know I don't fit under it when its on the ground

It was really tight up against the bed cross member. He may have pulled it up really tight when it was a bit under pressured in cold weather. Later when the air temp increased/pressure up in the tire, it may have done that damage.

Or, you might be right it could have been real loose at one time, got damaged, then he snugged it up.

Main message is just for folks to not find tire damage AFTER they have a flat. Just check them periodically for too loose/tight as it could change with air temp and/or cable stretch. Also, if you don't run them down once in a while here in the Midwest, they will be rusted solid when you need to use the spare. I've seen that on my other 95 and my Dad's 95.

This would be a good candidate for a 3D printed tire protector that would act as a barrier between the tire and the bed x-member.

I bought the Daytona 3T 24"lift jack but the Pittsburgh brand jacks get really good reviews and I think were even listed as one of the 5 best on a site or two (probably with compensation for the recommendations but I'm cynical and think all the "best of..." sites get paid for it). Also use the 6t jack stands and very happy with them. But I also lay the tires down under there just in case. Little bit of a pita wiggling around jacks and tires but makes me feel better.

The 20% coupons usually exclude jacks but my patience paid off and I got a coupon that was good for the jacks as well. Have only seen that one time unfortunately.

I had read in the reviews that a lot of people found their jack to be low on oil out of the box so I bought a bottle when I was there and sure enough needed to top it up before using it.

and if you don't find a coupon..they will! Every time I go there they check the coupon book and online for me. And usually just do 10% off anyways.

I got the US General tool boxes from them, nice units and go on sale a lot.

 

the key is to not have the jack stand extended super far. I use large 22''ish chunks of 8x8 wood blocks..or maybe they are 10x10..either way. Set the jack stands on those and its plenty high and stable. Ive freaking wrenched the crap out of some stuff and never had an issue if you place things right.

 

Yeah I usually feel the same but it sucks when the hi-lift is all you've got though...and in snow no, less. I had a lot more confidence in my hi-lift after this though




We had to swap out my cv axle when it blew up in Big Bear last year. I've seen 2 Hi Lifts drop (not mine) and both were because the owner never lubricated them before use. I always spray mine down with Tri Flow and it's never done anything sketchy.

Key things in those situations to add as much safety as you can. Not specifically directed at you @eon_blue, your post here is good reference tho.

Putting the removed tire UNDER the vehicle as you have done in the first picture. If it makes you feel better, put your spare under there too.

Secure the high lift handle to the main jack body when it's holding the vehicle up. That way, there is no chance if it getting knocked or someone accidentally doing something with it they shouldn't.

Making sure the jack base is as secure as possible using rocks or whatever you can find around you. Even Digging a small hole to put the base in would help, if you are able to in the location you are stopped.

This thread has a plethora of good information and products that can contribute to safer high lift jacking. Some of the stuff is not cheap but items can be gathered slowly or even makeshift items could be made.

Good info! Yeah I knew even then that I was ill prepared for that kind of road repair especially in those conditions, fortunately we made it but next time I'll be better equipped. We didn't have a bigger base for the hi lift so we just used the stock one, but that's the part that sketched me out the most. I have one of those wider 'offroad base' attachments for it now

That will cost you about $28. You'll also need rivets and a gun of course. And you'll need a way to widen the angle of the brackets that attach to the hood. I used a vise.
