Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

I laughed at your comments because I do the same on I5 south over the hills from DT Portland like I'm on a Cali highway! Put it in S mode and speed racer here we go! We really do have to navigate around these crappy Oregon drivers and my wife gets anxious as well.

I too, am on 1.04 91 and love it. Will probably request a custom 1.05 91 tune as I'm on 35's fully armored weighing in at 6,250 lbs...

 

OMG my gf HATES it when I actually DRIVE. I put it in S mode, let the revs go higher and she says, isn't that going to hurt your transmission? lol
This morning on the way to work, it was her turn to drive. Middle lane, slow lane. Everyone including trucks are passing us.
In her cute little spaceship looking Rav4 no less.

Very misleading reply there mate. Mat is trying to fix it and you can't blame him for undertaking this project to tune these trucks only to find out they factory tune was utter trash.

@OVTune 5 days on updated 1.05, 04A61 acceleration is perfect, had the idle surge one time, 2nd day. Havent had any issues with the transmission hanging in 4th, actually what I am experiencing is an almost non existent 4th??? I have carefully monitored the shift pattern, and with constant acceleration, it will go 1-3 perfect, when it hits 4th, within a second it shifts automatically to 5th. It does it every time. Causes the motor to lug the rpms too low, I have to compensate by more throttle to make it downshift to keep at same pace I was before. Is the newer update supposed to address this at all or just it hanging up?? I never notice it on the interstate, but every time, I turn a corner, it upshifts past 4th, and thats where the primary power needs to be. I dont use S mode, but have used ECT last 2 days, and FWIW, that to me is where this whole tune needs to be on 1.05 because it holds the gears through the power in normal city stop and go power

 

I’m getting some maintenance on the taco out of the way today. All that’s missing is 1.05 for 04B03 dongle

 

Sounds like there might be some trade offs to fix the 4th gear hang issue a few are having. So I'm saving all versions of 1.05 to see which one works best for me. Good to be an early adapter.

 

I have the exact same condition on newest 1.05 93 file. Truck shifts to 5th too soon > throttle applied to continue acceleration > downshift to 4th. Happens almost every time. ETC is a little too aggressive for daily driving in my opinion

you are 100% correct.

my wife has an 18 highlander that i drive (though i don't enjoy it) on the weekends and it has the same exact shift logic as the tacoma....but with the 8 spd which is properly spaced gearing and a much quieter passenger compartment, i don't notice it at all. throttle is responsive and it shifts when it needs to and i don't even notice it. it'll cruise at 1100 rpm in 8th but as soon as it sees load or i push the go pedal down, it immediately goes to whatever gear it thinks i need and in real world, it works well.

shifting and driving should be seamless, not something that constantly distracts you while driving wondering what the vehicle is doing or why.

 

Sounds like 1.05 will needed to be used with shiftsense to keep the gears where they are supposed to be. It seems as if Mat has reached the limits of the software inside the ECU/TCU. I recall him saying the downshifts and upshifts are programmed the same so if that is correct you can't change the upshift pattern without changing the downshift pattern and vice-versa!

 

Remember each truck is unique, just because one user have shifting regularities doesn't mean you will experience the same behavior. So I wouldn't make any assumption until the tune is loaded on your truck.

Side note, we have 20 to 30 mph winds today, I drove headwind going 65 mph, it held 6th and 5th very well on 1.05 91. This would have been a 6-4-5-6-4 gear dance nightmare on stock tune, and maybe even 1.04R.

 

I haven't reached the limits.

I just tested today what the truck will do if I default ECT shift only when the truck starts up. Drives exceptionally well, a lot like people would like I guess, but MPG isn't as good as allowing the dance.

Also I have already got a fix for the trucks that get stuck in 4th on the highway.
