FYI, I’ve owned Toyota trucks for the last 20years, starting with a first gen Tacoma which I ran into the 200k mileage and rode her rough on dirt and asphalt. Never a hiccup. Moved up to a brand new first gen tundra dc Darrell waltrip ed which I decked out with bilstein bst coil overs, uca, and rear leaf kit plus 5100 shocks. She was just traded in for my 3rd gen Tacoma with 190k on the clock and still a ton of life left in her and not a single issue ever. I wasn’t going to get rid of her but have no room for a full size anymore and absolutely love my new taco. I expect this new truck to last at least 200k. I challenge anyone with a domestic truck of any size to match that reliability.
Anyone that says Toyota’s aren’t reliable are blowing smoke.

Nope. All third gens suck. Look at the OP, his tranny is going to implode on his and he's only at 10K miles.

I am in the middle of writing my second book. My first was an autobiographical novel that you may have seen - Naked Came I. The second will be an exposé on how Toyota hates us all.

I've done hours of countless research (mostly by perusing Tacoma World) and have come to some startling revelations....while I don't want to spoil it, I reveal in agonizing detail the following things:

(1). Toyota hired a team of spinal surgeons to come up with a seat and seating adjustment system that would inflict sciatica and strangulated hemorrhoids on customers.

(2). Toyota employed a team of audiologists to engineer a subsonic vibration into the driveline at certain speeds. The purpose of this was to drive a portion of the customer base into a senseless rage and force them to create ten new threads a week about the same issue.

(3). Toyota went to Afghanistan and spent countless hours interviewing Taliban IED specialists on how to wire the seat heaters in such a way that they would eventually cause the truck to catch on fire.

(4). Toyota put out a want ad in the trade papers specifically asking for transmission programmers who ranked at the bottom 1% of their class so that they could hire them to work on the shift logic for the 3rd Gen transmission.

(5). Toyota eschewed car play and android auto in favor of Entune. The engineers that created entune were renown in the auto industry as specialists in converting popular songs into elevator music. Half of them were also tinnitus sufferers.

I have more surprises in store for my readers. Stay tuned and keep your eyes out for my upcoming book laying all this bare - "All of Them Do That - Why Toyota Hates Your Guts".

I had one in high school. It was bulletproof, but horribly gutless.

You could literally be going downhill, with the wind at your back and lose speed when you pressed the accelerator.

I'll be surprised if mine makes it to 100k the way I feel like I have to smash the gas pedal to get the thing going.

When are you supposed to have the transmission fluid flushed?

Also I'm surprised you're getting 13 mpg with over 100k miles.

I believe 60k. And I have an SOS front bumper, sliders, rear high clearance with swingout, Also 285/75s/16 tires. I got 19-22 before all these things. I was also hauling a 18ft car hauler with a load of steel too during this tank.

Ah, well that makes more sense. How does your transmission seem with all the added weight? Do you think you have to regear?

It handles the weight good, actually picked up 1.5 mpg after the service and update. Drives better than ever. As of now, I don’t feel the need to regear.

"Drive line vibrations is the biggest thing" -
Check you lug nut on all the tires. loosen them all and tighten to 83ft lbs. That usually eliminates 90-95% of this type issue on new vehicles. You can rotate and ck the balance if issue is still present.

    "Clunks" -
Check and tighten leaf springs U joints to spec. Also check and tighten rear U joint fasteners to lbs specs (90-95%)

"Slipping." Use ECT, S mode and observe if the problem goes away or get better. If so, run it in those modes till 1800 miles and check back.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I was planning on getting it done anyways, but it started to shudder when the TC locked up I got it done sooner.
