Direct Wire a Wireless Charging Phone Mount?

Good Morning TW. I have recently installed a Dash Multi Mount and picked up a phone holder that has wireless charging mounted on a RAM ball. I do have the Qi deck below the dash but I don't like keeping my phone down there all the time. I like having it in a good spot for using certain apps and what not without having to look away from the road. Plus, my passenger can use the wireless deck if need be. Anyway, my question is about direct wiring this charger into the truck. Has anyone done this? I currently have the wire running around the radio to the plug on the bottom right of the switch panel. Is it OK to wire it to the back of the plug that it is currently plugged into? Or is there a better location? I believe the charger is 10W max. It is one of the "fast charging" ones.

I plan to drill a hole in the DMM to allow the wire to go in near the RAM mount.

An easy method to clean things up would be to use these wire clips to tuck the wire in and get it out of the way. I'm sure if you wanted to beyond that you could route the wire down behind the radio and hardwire it into the USB plug. You should be able to get power there, but probably not data capabilities.

Also, care to share what charger / mount that is? I'd like to do something similar in the near future.

 

Those clips look good. I don’t know if they would work with the DMM though. Plus I’d rather just hard wire and not have anything plugged in at all. At least until I need to use the plug for another accessory. No need for data as I will just need power for the charger.

Tap one of these behind the radio well area. You’ve already pulled off the bezel before, the radio is four 10mm screws and there’s plenty of room and a couple hot wires back there. These have usb ends or get the ones with standard leads and there’s your 5v power supply.

Oh yeah? I must’ve missed that on his thread. Did he mention an estimated timeframe of it becoming available? Gonna have to dive back into that thread. That would be a good option as well.
