Neither of these bother me in the slightest, still sounds like a fun trip to me

For all worried about the route it's pretty easy for a 4wd Tacoma, I ran from section 3 to the New Mexico border in May, would have done the whole thing but a brush fire blocked the start.

The section in AZ4 along the railroad tracks between mammoth and winkelman requires care because there are some washouts that can sneak up on you.

Most of sections 3 and 4 is graded dirt road that a sports car could do. Good camping spots are rare because much of it is not on public land.

I had a great time but sections 5, 6 and 7 are where I had the most fun. Sections 3 and 4 are pretty tame.

I'm still a maybe on this but things are looking up. It might be a good time to ask what we will be using for communication cb or ham? I have ham but would need to borrow a CB if that's the most common radio. And morning start sounds good. I'm sure we can get a Phoenix caravan together.

I've got a handheld ham, but haven't gotten my license yet. I will have a CB by the time this trip happens.

I might be interested in this but I have TRD Off-road 2WD. How challenging will this be?

Is your radio programmed for the gmrs frequencies? That's what I do when I give my radios to buddies without their licenses and we can still talk.

I know how, but haven't messed with it since I'm fairly certain it's illegal due to the power output of handheld ham radios being more than what is permitted on GMRS frequencies.

Good tires, good lines, and a little recovery skill will get you anywhere you want to go! I dont think you will have an issue only being 2-wheel drive. Just have good AT tires at a minimum and some cheap traction boards from that online giant, air down in the sandy sections...and you should be just fine. I think with the crew that is going there will be no issue getting you out if you do happen to get stuck.

I have done section 5 to 6 many times (FR203), just not recently and NOT in "Gloria", I would have to agree this is a fun section!

So it seems most likely that (4) days will be plenty of time if section 3 & 4 a "sports car" can do! haha! I have seen this dirt road personally and it is pretty smooth.

@OmegaMan73 I will be running a CB my good man! Uniden 520XL! Cant wait to see your pertty eyes!

I've got dual band HAM radio, a handheld tri-band HAM with FRS channels and I can get a CB if needed. No GMRS capabilities though. We just need to decide what we want to use.

I'm in, I don't work any of those days anyway!

For those comparing radios, I really only use my CB, this may be the last trip I use my truck on before I start building my land cruiser so I never installed my HAM haha

I’ll have the CB installed soon. Since CB is legal for anyone, should we just plan that as we can’t all get HAM licenses by end of Feb?

The more I look at it, I may just meet everyone in Hereford or the trail head. I can start my trip down the day before and go through New Mexico and enjoy the views without the city traffic.

seems wise, a nice HAM setup is a decent chunk of change so I imagine not everyone will want to invest

I just need to pick up a CB and install it. Probably a 520XL since it seems many on TW have and like it.

Yeah that Uniden is a proven radio and fits easy in the cab if you don't use the ashtray for something already. All the people I usually wheel with have one.

If you need a hand tuning it I have all the stuff for that and can bring it on the trip
