Yes just like every other vehicle.

Great that you have vehicles that "make the grade" that you don't have to fix.

I have had the unique experience to "travel" all over the world and let me say one thing from MY experiences.....the folks that belittle a turbo in any stretch of the imagination....are WAY off base.

I'll give any manufacturer a prop for using a turbo

    PERIOD DOT.

I care about reliability 110%....not one vehicle with a turbo either at home or in other places let me down.

Take that to the bank from personal experiences.

For example a 1985 GM 1/2 ton 4x4 with a 305 4 barrel carb had roughly 165 HP and 240 lb/ft torque. The current fad of the last 15 years or so of high HP/TQ is largely unnecessary for 95% of truck owners.

For a modern example, a 6.6 liter Duramax can be tuned upwards of 500hp and 975 lb/ft of torque. There are more Duramax's getting groceries than pulling 10,000# trailers.

That 85 GM probably has a 0-60 in about 13 seconds, would not call it a Fad to have something that moves along better than that with traffic.

The 2.3 Ecoboost has had its share of issues. These ran the gamut from cracked blocks to head gasket issues to the widely reported heat soak issue on the intercooler causing a derate at optimum operating temps...Motor Trend noted a consistent de-rate even at 55 degrees in the Mustang with the same drivetrain. What a fucking joke. Ford should be horrified.

I'm a fan of properly designed turbo diesels - as the combination of the turbo and the diesel avoids some of the stoichiometric issues that affect turbo charged gasoline engines. Thats why you see a lot of civilian and military turbo diesel applications in hot and or humid climates where a gasoline turbo falls on its face. Having owned and club raced an Evo 9, I also like gasoline turbo engines, but understand their applications and the added complexity they impart on maintenance and performance.

Now getting back to the 2.3, I haul both at work and at home (fifth wheel). The idea of a small displacement gas powered turbo engine in a towing application makes no sense to me. Especially when said turbo is already suffering de-rating issues in passenger cars and has been noted as doing so in major car magazines. That 310 ft-lbs of torque number will never materialize when you're towing a 5000 lb load up a steep grade in hot weather and the intercooler develops heat soak. As it's already been noted by some reviewers and referenced in this thread, the fuel economy for this eco boost is in line with the 2.7 and 3.5 ecoboosts - namely in that it overpromises and under delivers.

The new rash of reviews confirms what we already know. The Ranger will provide a better trip to the mall and it will do so with a powertrain that has been a disaster for the Big Blue suppository. It will sell extremely well due to its comfort and amenities. The high price will be offset by generous incentives and resale value will lag behind the Tacoma.

The Tacoma will still be relevant and will still hold its own performance wise.

I'm jealous of 310 lbs of torque, especially at 3000 Rpm. The lack of low end torque in the taco is the only real bummer of the 3rd gen.

I look at this as middle of the toad as I can, and I would pick the Tacoma first, Colorado/Canyon second, frontier third, and ranger last in the mid size game. I really don’t like the looks and to get to the top of the line it’s closer to 50k after taxes and everything. If they made the ranger in the old body style and not in the European style I would consider it

    110% what you work with!

    GREAT JOB!

But you might be missing the point.

It might not make sense to YOU but for others it makes perfect sense...

Good on you for hauling the large loads that you would love to "haul" over the passes here in Colorado.

Just don't get in my way when I try to "pass"

    LOL

Oh, ok. Well, as a companion post, I see blown turbos every day and replace them personally bout maybe twice a week. Readers take note.

I can only imagine how you feel about Chevy using a 4 Cylinder turbo in a Silverado, bigger truck with towing applications, I am guessing that powerplant will be in the Colorado in the near future.

Your turbo isn’t big enough and you probably don’t have the wallet. ;)

The most reliable vehicles (minus some old ass Mercedes) are NA vehicles. But y’all free to think and do whatever you want.

What? There’s no winning here. Stay.

If everyone agreed (as someone mentioned earlier) this place would be boring and uneducational.
