You’re either all in with mods (and supporting mods for your mods) or deal with the fact that you own a Tacoma and not a big v8. I’m on 33s M/T and always on ECT/s5. MPG sucks but that’s just how it goes. Adding any weight to your wheels will suck the life out of your power and gas.

Even if you had a V8.. adding any weight to your wheels will have a larger affect than adding weight anywhere else. You have to understand that.

Best thing you can do is re-gear.
These are great trucks, but gearing and power arent their strongest attribute.

I suspect the new v1.05 from OVtune will solve your highway issue of getting stuck in 4th gear. In fact, that was one of Mat's primary objectives with the new version of his tune.

If OVtune alone doesn't completely satisfy you, then, and only then, consider swapping to 4.88 gears.

Just looked up the rims, they weigh 39 pounds a piece. The tires you are running are 58 pounds a piece (E rated I'm assuming). That's a lot of added weight.

You need OVtune. The new tune helps the shifting and power tremendously and helps with mpgs.

The tires looks like he is running the terra grapplers which is 43lb a piece. Think you got your weight looking up the ridge grapplers. 117T XL BSW 31.89" 11.18" 7.5-9.5" 8.5" 13/32" XL 2833 lbs 50 psi 43.3 lbs

Honestly, I'm not sure it has anything to do with the lift. I'm 100% stock with the exact same issue. I can put it in sport mode and force it to shift into 6th some of the time but generally it just ignores my up shift. When it listens i get about 16mpg, if i leave it in drive i get 14.5 mpg tops. The thing stays at like 4000 RPMs all the time on the highway and gear hunts between 4 and 5. I've taken it back to the dealer twice they tell me that's just how the tranny's are in these. Makes me wish i had waited to custom order the manual like i was originally going to. Honestly this is the only thing about my Tacoma that really bugs me. Coming from a 9mpg wrangler TJ, 14 IS a step up,but its still nowhere near the advertised mpg. ‍♂️

Hey Jordan, welcome to the family. As you've probably already learned, the Tacoma World family is very blunt, sarcastic and will tell you what they're thinking with no filter. Please don't let that scare you away from here. This place serves as a wealth of knowledge for any and all Tacoma related things.

That being said if you just buy these you'll be back to normal as soon as you install.

Yall are acting like he put 33"+ tires on. Those are only 31.9" tires, 1" larger than stock and equivalent to a 265/75r16.

No need to run 4.88s with that size...

So they are a little heavy, but no heavier than my setup (stock 16" steelies with 285s) and my little 2.7 pushes them just fine.

Sounds like a turd gen issue, not a wheel/tire issue.

OP, OVTune seems to be the number one solution!

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Shift Sense Pro. It's less than $200.00 and it makes driving these trucks soo much better. I got one and finally didn't want to trade in the truck! It has three shift maps that are easily changed. I have mine tucked into the area under the cup holders and just unplug and tuck the wires under the dash when I take it to the dealership. There is a video on YouTube that sold me on the product.
I've been following the OV tune thread for 6 months now and still feel like Shift Sense Pro is a viable and much cheaper option to address the shifting problems. OV tune does a lot more than change the shift map, but if that is all you are looking for Shift Sense Pro is a great option.

In addition to the suggestions above, slowing down will help. This truck has the aerodynamics of a brick and it doesn't have the power to pull you along at 84mph (87.5mph accounting for your tire size) at low RPM.

We get that a lot here... all the big bro trucks park in 2-4 spaces at a time. Drives me nuts and usually leave a note.
