There's a gate for one of the mountain roads near me that gets locked by the Forest service at sunset every day, and you should see the locking device they use...it is intense. It's like a 3 ft wide steel wheel with 20+ individual Masterlocks on it, each one prevents the wheel from turning so you'd have to unlock every single one to turn the wheel and open the gate. Best way I can describe it.

I think there's an ability to unlock the entire thing at once though, because once I got stuck behind the gate and had to call the local police department to send someone over and let me out...took them over an hour to arrive and they had it unlocked pretty quickly. I still can't figure out who thought that kind of locking contraption was a necessity. Wish I had a pic of it.

    You have me intrigued.

There must be a pic of it somewhere on the internet. Can you do an image search using how you would describe it?

See it’s not my truck, it’s ours. I have my WRX, she has her Mazda, we have the Tacoma. We each put 50% of the cash in, she doesn’t have any interest in driving a manual and I’m fine with that so need to keep it auto. Plus sometimes when I need to drive up to LA and deal with that shitshow an auto is nice for the stupid heavy traffic.

I would kill for a manual WRX...all wheel drive, stick shift, turbo...goddamn those sound like fun cars to drive. One of my supervisors at work has one with all the upgrades and a manual, I want so badly to take it to lunch one day.

Yes, very similar to this but it sat parallel to the ground, was bigger and had at least 20 locks on it. But same concept it looks like

Not until she learns to drive manual, once that happens then I'm fine letting her drive. That's the only thing that keeps me from letting anyone I trust drive it...very few people I trust actually know how to drive stick. I'm not about to have to replace another clutch when I just had that done over a year ago.

I leveraged the idea of us getting a bigger xmas tree this year with me being able to buy a sawzall for my tool kit...bigger tree = need a sawzall to cut it up and put it in the green waste bin, last year doing it with a hand saw sucked.

He's in California, thinking about smoking the clutch gets him an epa fine. Actually changing the clutch is gonna require a refinance on his house and sacrificing his first born to Al Gore.

I remember when we rolled up on the locked gate and couldn't get through, I looked at my wife and said 'looks like I might have to get the recovery strap out and pull this sucker open'

Then I walked over to the gate and saw that lock contraption and realized I'd need a Unimog to bust through that lol.

Luckily there was a sign nearby that had a local PD number on it and they sent someone over to let us out.

I will teach her eventually, probably when I plan on putting a new clutch in this truck in a year or so and don't care much about burning up this one.

I'm overly paranoid about this clutch because I spent so much money on it a couple years ago...had an aftermarket clutch installed backwards by an incompetent shop, they refused to refund me and I needed my truck ASAP so I mistakenly took it to Toyota who bent me over and made sweet love to me raw, to the tune of about $3,500, for a stock clutch. That combined with the aftermarket ruined one, I was out quite a bit of money. So yeah I'm a little paranoid about this one lol.

This was all back about 2 years ago shortly after I got the truck, didn't have much if any experience working on it at all. Learned some hard lessons from that experience

I love my Hackzall. I never really needed a sawzall enough to buy my own, I just borrow my friends' when needed. The hackzall is perfect for me & can use it with only one hand for small stuff which is nice. I love the size.

I actually just sold my old brushed hackzall a few weeks ago & got the brushless. No reason though, the old one worked fine. But I'm already invested in the M18 line so it didn't cost much to just buy the bare tool only.

Damn those two experiences together could buy a fleet of self installed clutches. Most I've ever paid for the physical clutch components was $600 (nice fucking clutch too) but install has always been just my time. Bring your junk up here and we'll swap it in an afternoon

Your clutch is actually some sort of miracle for how horrible it feels to not actually be broken. But you're right a normal stock clutch on a Tacoma is durable it just feels mushy as shit like it's going out through it's entire life.

yeah next time I just might take you up on that, I don't think I'm to the point where I'd have confidence in doing a clutch job myself but I could knock it out with the help from someone that knows how.

Yeah Toyota screwed me big time on that one, to this day I still get angry thinking about it lol. But that's a dealership for ya, they pull stuff like that on people the nation over every single day. Crazy.
