Mig is all new to me.
I need to figure out wire speed, heat, and shield.. :goingcrazy:

I’m use to an electrode and hitting slag with a hammer.

I said Lemme get a big ass tank, I believe they called it a 125

Different gas gives different results, a guy at work likes to use a carbon/nitrogen/whatever mix and gets pretty shiny welds out of it

Easy cowboy. No need to confuse the newbs. C25 mix is great for short circuit MIG

The auto-set feature on the millermatics is super intuitive to get you going. It adjust wire speed for you so all you have to do I dial in the heat. Use the chart inside to get you more or less set up and you’ll learn the micro adjustments as you go. There’ll be times you’ll find where auto-set will hold your hand more than you’d like so you can turn it off and set your wire speed as desired.

I learned to weld on my millermatic years ago and now can set up my machine blindfolded.

No need for experimentation. There are many different gas blends available, but almost all are for specific processes and/or materials. Technically speaking @Chux could run a C10 or C5 mix or even a tri mix if doing spray transfer which his machine is capable of, but he will probably never do.

@Chux you probably will end up finding yourself running full (100%) argon at some point, as I know you intend to weld a bunch of aluminum

Weld all day every day and it's like riding a bike, the moar heat the merrier if the thickness you're welding can support the heat.

Let me preface this by saying, I realize I’m not experienced enough to give real welding advice...

But, I just follow the suggested settings on the inside cover of the Hobart. I only recently started to tweak said settings.

I had been setting the gas flow rate to 20. Jon told me 15 should be fine, so I turned it down, and he is correct.

I’m not really doing anything special. I’m assuming once you start using that gas, your welds will be nice and shiny too.

In the end, it doesn’t matter how shiny your welds are as long as you miter everything.

That’s what I always say anyway.

If you really want them to shine, hit them with a wire cup. I do this before painting welds that I don’t feel like (read that aren’t ugly enough to need it) grinding.

I won’t lie, not all my welds are so shiny.

These next two were welding over gaps.
The first one looks OK. The second I probably got a little ahead of the puddle and the wire shot down into the gap causing popping, smoke, and backtracking. Causing bumps and blackness. I was also welding over a, too large, tack I believe.

The welds are also too chunky most likely. Now, I’m starting to crank up the heat, or turn down wire speed. Still learning as I go.

That’s OK though. I’m only welding for myself.

These wheels were a PIA. The gap here is probably a little over 1/8”.

It was tough (for me anyway) to go all the way around all four of these filling that gap, while trying to not completely melt the lip of the wheel off.

I tacked the ring on flush to the lip, so there was also a void below the ring.
