There’s a problem with that approach. Used Tacoma’s are overpriced and don’t come with a warranty.

I’ve owned an R8 since 2010 as well as Tacoma’s along side the R8. Just sold the R8 with only 38k on it because I got tired of the maintenance. I’ve put over 100k on 2 other Tacoma’s since 2010 and am now in my 3rd gen. Sure the Tacoma isn’t a sports car, but it’ll get you where you need to go in all conditions and won’t leave you stranded because of a breakdown.

I currently lease an S3 and have a Tacoma Pro and I totally did for the same reason. Luxury cars are not a priority, I rather take a smaller hit on depreciation and keep something I can perhaps daily, keep for 10 years and have more fun with it.

You will hate the brakes, transmission ( if automatic) and gas mileage, my 2cents after 900 miles in new TRDPro.

I had a Challenger Scat Pack 6.4L. Nice car but always was worried when I parked it in a parking lot and it was not easy to pick up 80# bags of concrete. Don't miss it a bit

I think your math may be off a bit... 2019 models are out, so 2019 -2 years = 2017. 4-5 year old tacomas would be in the 2014 and 2015 range, also a whole different generation of tacoma.

I've worked for Audi for nearly 9 years and owned several from the 70's all the way to my wife's current 2018 Q5. I came out of 2017 A4 Quattro Sport and I've been in my 2018 DCOR for about 3 months and am quite happy. I live in Las Vegas and am a Season Pass holder at Mammoth Mountain so I drive on the highway and over a couple 7500ft Mountain Passes to get there and the Tacoma handles it all very well. The adaptive cruise and auto high beams are especially helpful when traveling the two lane I95 highway at night. The one complaint that I have is the wind noise from the doors, my A4 was more quite with the sunroof vented! But the A4 is a super slippery car with a very low drag coefficient. As far as I'm concerned, Audi quattro with all-seasons is as good as any car/truck in the snow and far better than most but the utility, ground clearance and comfort of the 3rd Gen is pretty solid. I tried a hard top Rubicon Unlimited and hated it after the first road trip. I feel like the Tacoma is a blend of the A4 and the Rubicon minus the far superior Audi tech.

Just got out of a Gen7 GTI and back in a Tacoma. I miss the mileage (mid 30's) and turbo but not how low that thing sat. Was also getting toward the end of warranty. At the end of the day the truck is just more my style.

I also wasnt talking to you first, I was talking about 2 year old tacomas not your post, I quoted another post about used tacoma prices. You quoted my post about 2 year old tacomas that was not referring to your post.

Not sure if that was a mistake on your part, but I wasnt talking about you or your post, but rather 2 year old tacomas in reference to used tacoma prices.

Sold my a4 for a Tacoma. Audi was a great car but expensive to maintain when shit broke. In my opinion Audi and Subaru are the best AWD cars. I made it places in the snow you wouldn't believe. MY taco has been flawless and is certainly the best vehicle I've yet to own

Owning any luxury car out of warranty is expensive to maintain, that's why they're so cheap after the warranty expires. The people that can afford to repair them can also afford to buy a new car with a warranty, lol.

Keep the Audi and get the truck. If the Audi starts becoming expensive to maintain then sell it.

I recently bailed out of a Volvo S80 (2004 year model). EVERYTHING on that car was an expensive repair bill. If it costed $500 on my Ranger, the same fix would cost $1,000 on the Volvo. It did reach 220k before I gave it away. Yes I actually gave it away because once it reached 200k the book value was terrible. I gave it to a good friend because they needed another car.

Look up what the Audi will be worth at 200k miles. I have to think that they hold their value better than a Volvo, but then again who knows. Also If your Audi ever needs work, are you tied to a dealership or do you have mechanics in your area that specialize in European autos? These things can get expensive in a hurry.

These are all things to consider.

Consider keeping the Audi as a daily driver if you can.

I came from a German car, just a Golf but highest trim level:

The manual transmission on the Golf was miles ahead of my manual Taco. More precise throws, lighter clutch pedal.
The seats in the Taco are atrocious compared to the Golf, also the Volvo I have. Anybody who rides with me for more than 100 km complains about the passenger seat.
My Golf was a diesel that had 1000 km range in the summer, cost me $60 to fill the tank every three weeks. The Taco needs 70 litres of gas every Sunday, about $70 right now. I can get about 450 km on a tank depending on how far into the reserve I want to go.
Average after a full year of ownership is 15.7 l/100 km, which I consider quite poor. You really have to get your foot into the Taco to make any kind of progress, it is dog slow. To be fair my summer wheels, 17" 4 Runner pro with the biggest KO2s I could fit without rubbing, weigh about 35 kg per corner, that does not help mileage for sure.
The ride in my Sport Taco, which I bought because I never really go off road, is so stiff and agricultural that I am considering retrofitting springs with a lower spring rate, also softer shocks. I am sure it will be $1500 so I have been putting it off.
The tech in the Tacoma is a joke compared to the Golf. I have to reset the bluetooth on my iPhone every time I want to listen to Spotify. The voice recognition is pretty bad too, have to repeat myself about 3 times for the system to get it right.

All that said, the Taco is a highly useful vehicle that has given me good service so far. I do not need a half ton truck for my lifestyle. I can fit the Taco in my garage, no chance of fitting a half ton in there.

Nobody ever said "Nice Golf" to me at a gas station. People say "nice truck" to me all the time.

I have a dodge Charger for my Daily driving and bought this year a used 09 Tacoma for pure weekend and vacation fun.
I really love the tacoma for the reasons I bought it for, but when I would run out of money and only would be able to afford one car, I would sell the tacoma because I am not enjoying it enough for daily driving. Slow, bad on gas, bad breaking, bad shifting and rough ride.
For the winter here in Mi I have winter tires and never needed 4x4 or awd and for the versatility I have a hitch and $600 trailer.

So from my personal experience I wouldn't trade your car for a Tacoma, when you are not using it offroad and don't need the hauling advantages of a truck too often.

But also my truck is far away from stock so it might be much more comfortable with a new and stock Tacoma to daily drive then I experienced it with mine.

    Hi jamesly,

Figured I would give you my two cents since I come from a somewhat similar situation. I owned a 2004 Infiniti G35 coupe 6MT. Bought my 2019 4x4 DCSB AT and sold the Infiniti. You may miss rowing your own gears if you go with an AT, but this thing is so much more practical than a sporty coupe. So far my only gripe is the volume buttons being left and right. For that to be my issue, you know this truck is fantastic.

Thanks for the read, and good luck if you haven’t already finalized your decision!!

I hear you. The manuals on the Vw/Audi are really great. I thought the manual Tacoma was good but apples and oranges comparison. Does the Tacoma MT change much over time / break in?

I don't know what to advise you about auto/manual. In the beginning, you are going to drive the truck in a way that gives you similar performance to your current car, because that is what you are used to. If you do that, you are going to burn even more fuel than me.

The reason Toyota only sells about 5% of Tacos in manual is because there is low demand for them. For resale you should probably get an auto.

But there is a lot of whining about the auto transmission. I can't tell if that's just because the people who frequent this forum are special.

I don't perceive any change in the way the transmission operates after a year. I do notice that you can't put the truck into first sometimes at a stoplight, you have to engage the clutch while in neutral for a second to get everything spinning and aligned. Never had to do that in my Golf.

I tried to find a 2015 in Spokane area, and PNW. About $3,000 less than a 2018. So decision was easy. Depends on where you are and the resale values in your area. PNW has high resale values typically. Even though we all laughed our butts off when the Tacoma first came out - if you are familiar with Tacoma, WA. Kind of a PNW inside joke.
