Other than looks, what purpose does the carpet liner inside the shells serve?

Okay, drove mine in the rain last night, with the ARE Z-series cap on it. I got water coming inside from the two swing-out windows locate at the back of the side windows. Anybody else have this problem, and if so what did you do to remedy it? I called the dealer and he said, basically, tighten them tighter. Hell, th' sumbitches WERE tight!

And I hear the FedX driver outside right now! Delivering my custom-sized memory foam mattress for my tuck bunk. Pics later.

I heard a ton of people complain about leaking. I took mine to the car wash last week and intentionally tried to get water in this thing. Just to find out where the weak points are. I had zero water inside after the car wash.

Ton of people complain about the Z-series leaking? If so , what are the remedies? It is dry as a bone every other place, just leaks enough that it drips from the cap sill down to the bed floor.

Thanks. Yeah I googled Z-series leaks and got tired of reading them. Some guys having to return to the dealer three times. I now have it narrowed down to about two dozen things it could be. :annoyed: Dealer is 60 miles from here. Going to rain tomorrow. Will get in the bed under the cap when it starts and narrow it down. I sealed the bed rail covers and front bulkhead gaps/front bed rail real good. It's dry all the way around except for the carpet on the bed cap mounting flange under the rear of the two side windows. This is a cat that I hope I can skin myself...too far to be running back to the dealer.

Are you SURE it's from the shell and not coming from under your bed rails? Tacomas are notorious for leaking under the bed rails. I posted in this thread about sealing them.

Yes. Certain. I ran two substantial beads of sealant down both bed rails and re-installed the bed rail covers. The wet carpet is directly under the two window section that can be opened on the sides. It is unlikely that both bedrails would leak in such a way as to produce the same length of wet carpet on either side. And while carpet may be capable of wicking the water UPWARDS, wicking couldn't wick that much water upwards.

Raining now. About to go out and back it out of the shop, get in the bed, close it up and find out where its coming in.

Anybody ever have any luck buying a canopy off a truck at a dealership? I figured if it were an older used rig it wouldn't really make much of a difference in their asking price and they'd be more willing (especially offering a solid number), but no luck on this end in my attempt.

I couldn’t get any to do it either, and the funny thing is some dealers throw them out.

Here's my snugtop, just got finished with the basic structure of a sleeping platform that clears my spare

Going to get some carpeting and a mattress of some sort soon and maybe a short drawer system on one side:headbang:
