I do not run weight in the back of my truck throughout the winter.

I pretty much will only have 4Hi engaged if the road is entirely snow covered. If the road is clear of snow and it's just cold I don't have 4WD engaged unless I know it's pretty slick and I'm doing stop and go traffic and I know my rear end will slide.

I will say this though, I don't engage in 4WD at all while on my cell phone while driving.

    LOL ;)

hey im 2nd gen. but a quick push of the VSC on ours cuts off engine breaking and gives strong limited slip. a 3second push cuts it all off for open diff. not sure if 3rd gen is the same:thumbsup:

Odds are the 4wd / AWDs were off the road because of

    1) the driver relies on the 4wd too much, and thinks they don't have to participate

    2) they haven't learned that the last word of both those acronyms is 'drive', not stop. So they lose it when braking.

    3) regardless of drive systems, tire grip still plays a huge role. All season's aren't.

Never been to the North East eh? Before I bailed to the south I use to chuckle at the knuckleheads running 70MPH plus on the interstate in New Hampshire with more snow then the plows knew what to do with. Fearless...…….

I think you guys are talking about two different things. Engine braking when letting off the throttle in gear or when the transmission downshifts vs engine (throttle) regulation when slip is detected. The first will always happen, the second can be turned off as described.

Interesting comment. Riotfunk, when you say ‘no one’ knows how to use 4wd, what do you mean?

Normal New Englanders generally have 2 or 3 bills of extra weight in the bed. Black ice is scary. Snow covered roads aren’t anything to worry about if you respect it.

Lot of ignorant comments on this thread, but thankfully in response to the OP, the owners manual is the best guide.
To be clear, anytime slippery conditions are encountered, you can use 4wd. It's that simple.

Driving on dry pavement is not recommended, and contrary to some statements here, you can do some damage even on straight driving. At the very least your tires are scrubbing and they may exhibit abnormal wear. At the extreme, you could do drive train damage.

When in doubt, the owners manual is your best friend.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I suspect the vast majority do, but the outliers make you shake your head. Also, I bet the Tacoma is a lot of folks 1st part time 4x4.

I use 4hi when my back tires are spinning out, when there is a ton of snow on the side residential roads, when I go into the river (in winter time) and if I’m doing a lot of stop and go and it’s slippery out. I change it all the time when driving too

I’ve had 2 4x4s in my time. This, and a z71 Tahoe. The reason for my question is that I care for this more than I did my Tahoe, as my Tahoe was a monster. 6” lift and huge tires and I would beat it up in the desert sand all the time and deep snow. I really don’t want to treat my brand new truck like that as it’s not used for the stuff I used my Tahoe for lol

Awesome. Tahoes are meant to be beat up. One of my buddies has an old one that just keeps going, even though plastic parts fall off it all the time. it's a tank.
