Trust me. Go for the 5.29s if your getting 35s. I would not enjoy my truck with 4.88s the same. And the low range crawling is amazing. It's well worth it and not too low.

I've never heard a guy with 35s and 5.29s complain. But have heard plenty that had 4.88s or 4.56s that wished they had gone lower.

    Especially with a heavy rig

Maybe let me walk you through my thought process then. 4.88s sounds the best to me because eventually I do want to add either a crawl box or an Atlas 4speed. I'm trying to keep my crawl ratios at a happy medium where it isn't too low to where I'm shifting into Drive just to keep up with people, but it's also enough to turn the big tires on the road, especially up any sort of hill. I guess for a bit of comparison, stock low range for my truck is 29.4:1, jumping to 4.88s would take that to 35.1:1 and 5.29s would take it to 38.1:1. With 4.88s and a 4.7 crawl box, I'd be looking at a 64.3:1, and with 3.8 Atlas it would be 51.9:1. With 5.29s those number jump to 69.7:1 for the 4.7 crawl box and to 56.3:1 with the 3.8 Atlas. As for final crawl ratios, 4.88s and 4.7 would be 165.2:1 and the 3.8 Atlas would be at 141.3:1. 5.29s would take that to 179.0:1 and 153.2:1. I'm not too concerned with final ratios since I won't be using the super low gearing unless want too. Ultimately, the 3.8 Atlas with 5.29s sounds the best, but a 4.7 crawl box is half the cost, which in turn gives me a bit lower of a gearing that I'd actually want, so the 4.88s help compensate for not being geared too low.

Now that I've typed this out, it definitely sounds like I've may have over thought this a bit. :anonymous: But I am curious to hear your thoughts on this.

If you're worried about shifting from love to hi to keep up with people you're screwed no matter what just die to having an auto since it only uses 3 gears in low range.

The other thing to think about is that with 5.29s you might not want or need a crawlbox. I know I used to want one bad but now..not as huge of a priority and I'm sire that would be even more so with an auto.

Numbers and numbers. And from my experience it is much much better to be over geared than under geared. The truck will drive better in every situation and be so much more fun. Especially with a fully armored heavy overloaded taco

I never even notice that the transmission only uses 3 gears in low. :bananadead:

I guess it really depends on where you wheel will justify the need for even lower gearing compared to just 5.29s. California definitely has the big rocks covered with Rubicon and Fordyce. Trails like those are definitely where I wish I had lower gear, and even some of the hard lines for the easier trails around here, having low low would have been really nice.

You're not wrong on having the truck over geared. Especially with my truck weighing 5500lbs on the trail.

Maybe after I drive Ferny's Taco I'll see the reason to jump straight to 5.29s. Still not looking to have the truck regeared until late Fall so I've got time.

My taco did something wierd last night. I stopped for 20 mins to let my diffs cool off.( breaking them in) and when I got back on the road it wouldn’t shift out of first. I stopped turned the truck off and on rolled it forward in drive then reverse and then tried again and everything was working fine again. Any ideas on why it would do that? Or should I be concerned?

I assume you have an auto, otherwise...:p

Check the trans fluid level, could be low or might need a drain and fill for good measure if it's been awhile

It was pretty cold, maybe that could play in to it? Like 20ish degrees

Could be, but it sounds like it was fully warmed up...If it acted like this first thing in the AM after a freezing night maybe but I suspect the fluid level or maybe it's time for a drain and fill for new fluid
