Do they make slimmer air ducts? Wondering if I could squeeze a few more inches out of the garage and basement. Pros and cons?

Everytime I try to figure out Sketchup I get nowhere. Any good free tutorial resources, you could link to?

My experience with sketchup is that if you're used to using Auto-Cadd or solid-works the shortcut keys make it confusing to go between the different softwares. Sketch up is more for " less technical " creations.

Thanks for the comments fellas. The only mechanical CAD type software that I've played with before is the program that eMachineShop puts out. I'm used to electrical CAD software where I can tell it what I want (resistor/capacitor/etc) and then I just have to arrange and connect them into what I want. I see the drawings other people make in SketchUp, and it just seems like I should be able to just tell it that I want a 2x4 or a piece of 1"x1"x1/8" A36 angle of a certain length and then arrange them as needed and make minor alterations (like miters or reliefs). When I have to start drawing and dimensioning all the individual parts, I get frustrated and lose interest fast.

Kind of my experience with sketchup as well so I just use base dimensions and fill in with texture etc instead of using the material for making the dimensions or connecting lines to start with.

I’ve been looking at this too long today...

How do I find the angle to make these 2 cuts(black arrows). Board going up is the red outline.

Lay a board on top of the treads , basically that will connect a line through the nosings . Take a level and draw a line level on the board and a line plumb on the board .

Remove the board and the 2 lines you have drawn will be the angles you need for your plumb and seat cuts .

Or you can draw a plumb line on the stringer and use a speed square , protractor or sliding t bevel to read the angle referenced off the bottom edge of the stringer . The seat cut will be square to the angle you find for the plumb cut .

Air nozzle separates them quickly. Just a quick puff at the seam.

Finished my kitchen ceiling. Now the crown molding is going up. Unfortunately part of the ceiling was off by over half an inch across eight feet. Need to build the island and then hopefully I’ll be painting by next weekend.

:goingcrazy:It's funny how when building a house you start with the foundation but finishing you start with the ceiling.

It's funny I've worked on a few of my own houses and helped build others and it amazes me how some people take shortcuts and other do things properly.

I was removing some 1/4" hardwood to be replaced by engineered bamboo and found that the baseboard was put in prior to the flooring so all the edge pieces were trimmed around the baseboard instead of the baseboard butting up to the flooring then adding 1/4 round or shoe molding.

Years ago I was replacing the shitty kitchen cabinets in my kitchen and found that the last guy hadn’t bothered leveling or plumbing them and the preferred method of “fixing” the gaps between the cabinets and walls was to stuff paper towels in the gap and use a whole tube of painters caulk over it and smooth it out.
I will give the guy credit though because it was smooth enough that I couldn’t tell until I started pulling everything. That’s some impressive caulking/trowel skills considering it was over a 1.5” gap.
