A 21-year-old prisoner who escaped from the high-security San Quentin State Prison in California was captured by police Saturday afternoon.


Shalom Mendoza, who was serving five years for using a deadly weapon during a carjacking attempt, walked away from a prison work crew Wednesday, according to police, and was discovered missing that night during an official head count.

By Saturday afternoon, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials had tracked down the escaped inmate and recaptured him at a Taco Bell in Paso Robles, according to the department.

Hours after escaping, Mendoza allegedly attacked and carjacked a woman in a Home Depot parking lot, stealing her 2011 Toyota Rav4 but leaving her with her dog.

“He came very fast and he had something inside and said I have a gun,” Dang Nguyen told ABC 7. “I need the key, give me the key. If not, I’m going to kill you.”

After his recapture, Mendoza was sent to Salinas Valley State Prison and the Marin County District Attorney’s Office will weigh further charges of escaping and carjacking.

I've seen a few of these around. There was one driving past my daughters school one day. Apparently they don't register school zones, since it was doing well over 15mph thru a cross walk during morning dropoff.
