Replacement Transfer Case. What to look for???

    What should one be concerned with when shopping for a replacement transfer case? Specifically a manual or J shift unit?

    Is mileage important or are they pretty much bullet proof?

    Are there seals that one should plan to replace?

    Any other advice to avoid a mistake?

    To be more precise. How risky is a unit with 155k Mikes for $125 vs paying $300 for one with 75k Miles. Both from running cars.

    Are these just bullit proof and it does not matter or is the extra $$ worth it????

    Flux Capacitor
    Make sure it’s from a vehicle with the same engine and transmission. They had differences throughout the years.

    If those two transfer cases you mention are identical in that they're both exactly what your model taco needs, I wouldn't have a problem at all with the 125 dollar one as long as the shifter moved smoothly and correctly and feel that the two outputs are as smooth as you can verify by hand. You could do the seals since it is out. I would only do seals if I felt very confident in my ability, otherwise if it seems no leaks might wanna leave it be. It seems like we see too many times where someone does a seal and it ends up leaking shortly down the road.

    Thanks guys. I guess my worry is the condition of what is inside the transfer case. Bearings, chain and all that. I have no issues replacing seals. Sounds like they are pretty robust then?

    I am doing a manual j shift into a 2004 3.4L using my old tranny with the needed parts to convert. (Output shaft, oil pan, 4x4 Nose cone and tranny mount)

    Bartmaster. I hear you. I have read your entire transfer case thread. Good stuff. Right now i am of the opinion that as long as the transfer case is from a V6 it will work. The 4x4 nose cone will come from a donor 4x4 tranny which i have yet to source.
