I have experienced that. I don't notice it now but when I first got my truck it scared me a couple times.

The AC compressor will always turn on and off periodically, even if you have everything off and no matter how cold it is. The compressor running has no connection to fan speed or outside temperature. It does this to keep the compressor seals lubricated. If it did not do that and it only ran when the AC was on, the seals would dry out and you would spend $$$$ to get it rebuilt.
Just make sure you firmly depress the brakes and you shouldn't have any problem.

Welcome. Also, fingers crossed is legit. When someone says that, you are most likely safe, as their fingers are crossed.

My wife's Accord does this especially when cold...if the AC compressor kicks on and you don't have your foot on the brake or not firmly enough, it'll lunge you forward. Not like how the OP is describing (15-20 feet) but it'll pull you along pretty good until press the brake.

Any AT tacoma will jump into something if you dont have your foot firmly on the brake pedal and the compressor cycles.

My 1st gen does it too.

I find when the engine is still warming up, you have to hold the brake harder than usual, especially if defrost (A/C) is on. the brakes also don't work as well until the pads warm up.

If you're on the brakes, the throttle override doesn't kick in for a couple seconds. Try it out some time.

Your engine (especially from a standstill) is outperformed by your brakes, big time. Like not even funny big time. Like my 400 rwhp supercharged racecar could not overpower its brake system big time.

Malcolm Gladwell did an experiment with a Toyota Camry going 70 mph. The driver floored the accelerator while doing freeway speeds, and then hit the brakes while the accelerator was still pressed to the floor. The Camry took longer to stop, but it came to a complete stop. The accelerator was to the floor the entire time. He repeated the same experiment several times, even attempting it at 100+ mph.

You're just new to the truck, and the phenomena that others have explained took you by surprise. No harm, no foul, just something to get used to.
