Frozen brakes... but weird

So this morning I had a hard time getting out of my driveway as the rear end didnt want to turn. I figured brakes and kind of did a front to back to front to back to jar them loose. They eventually gave. It was dark however so I wasnt able to do much observing of the tires. I just kind of know the feeling.

Just now I went to go to lunch and they were frozen again. I tried the same technique and it kind of worked. The odd thing is that this time they would spin freely in reverse but not at all forward after a few efforts.

I have never known frozen brakes to act this way. But, I didnt grow up where this is an issue too so I have some learning yet to do.

Thoughts?

 

water got in the brakes and froze is my guess.

 

Its the rear drums. Ice/snow melts and gets in them And when you stop they freeze up.

The being able to go in reverse and not forward, I belive has to do with one of the pads being frozen to the drum and the other not. You accelerate forward and it pulls the pad in like a wedge. Reverse doesnt seem to jam it up into the drum.

Might be wrong on that though. This just happened to me the other week at a coffee shop. Thank God It wasn’t a star bucks or it would have been posted all over tw.

 

Yes, the rear are drum.

Sure, but why would they sping freely in reverse but not at all in D?

Addition, I did do some sloppy wheeling this last weekend so I am not concerned at all about the fact that they would freeze. My concern is that that may not be it as normally they wont spin in either direction when they are frozen.

 

TW can be a tough crowd.

I hd the same thought about the different pads being frozen or not. Just figured Id put out a feeler.

Yeah i’m Not sure mine did it as well the other week. Could just be crude holding the shoe to the drum?

Drum brakes are great.....not.

 

Yet you bought a truck with rear drum brakes.

 

I certainly did. I love my truck but I don’t love the drum brakes and would much prefer discs.

 

Kind of late reporting back but anywho. I took the drum off and saw NOTHING that should have caused them to lock up. I cleaned them out the best I could anyway but it was just brake dust. There was no mud in it at all. Im stumped. It still does it everytime the temp is below about 30. I have even put it in 4LO and engaged the locker to free it up. It would work, but as soon as I disengage the locker, it locks up again.

Side note: theyre pretty stinkin thin to have 45k on them.

 

Is there even any pad left on the left shoe?

 

You can see there’s lots of brake shoe remaining

 

Its thin, but there is pad left. I am going to change them soon anyway but there should be plenty to not lock up.

 

I guess it's just the camera angle but the left shoe looks almost bare.
