Uncommanded motion is bad for sure. If it happens again, the brakes are way stronger than the engine, so press the brake pedal as hard as you can - vehicle will not move. Also, you can shut off the engine with the key or pushbutton.

MT 4 lyfe! Automatics are dangerously complicated, stay far away.

My truck has done that twice. The first time I wrote it off as having my work boots on and maybe I was on the gas with the outer edge of the boot. The second time I definitely wasn't on the gas. It lasted about 3 or 4 seconds and is a higher rpm than what I get from steering input surge. Both times were within 2 minutes of a restart ( after pulling out of a gas station ) but the engine was up to normal temp.

    ^^THIS^

    ^^And THIS^^

If this happens when the engine is fully warm, see dealer. However, it may go up 200-300 rpm anytime the A/C compressor engages/disengages

And always, always...Keep foot firmly on the brakes anytime you're stopped in "D" in any vehicle, new or old.
Computers runs these things now and you, not so much.

    Cheers!

This is probably it. If brake was sufficiently applied and the truck took off on its own, I'd kill it with fire.

    Lots-o-stuff

Do you have any proof of this?

It will run with the A/C on, obviously, and with the dial set to any of the defrost settings, but I've never known any auto manufacturer to run it at random times.
In fact, running it randomly would tend to kill the MPGs, which is something the auto manufacturers are struggling to meet.

The compressor puts a decent load on the engine, especially when it 1st engages. At speed you may never feel it or feel it very little. At a higher RPM the engine is developing good power. But at idle, the engine is not developing much power. The idle could significantly drop during engagement if it not for the ECU compensating by bumping the idle a bit.

You can feel the same idle compensation at idle by turning your steering wheel side to side

    What is your age?
This "unexpected acceleration" problem is the reason why Toyota made TSS standard. It was highly-publicized.

Toyota always claimed "user error". No reason was ever identified.

This has and still does happen occasionally and randomly to other manufacturers. If I recall correctly NASA got involved to officially get to the bottom or fault but they also came up empty.

I can believe the computer fouling up and causing 'lunging' issues BUT if the lady in the article put the vehicle in park it could NOT of taken off on it's own to hit the wall.

Sure. Open your hood, start the vehicle, pull up a chair and watch the compressor.

Every manufacturer does this. It only runs long enough to keep the seals oiled, less than 10 sec once every several minutes.

Your RPM almost doubled from 600 to 1100 RPM. Put your truck in park and rev it to 4000 RPM lol. You will know the difference.
