The wife spent some time growing up in the area and has always wanted to go back. Now that the Army is done dragging us around the world I'm thinking about making the move in the next couple years. Colorado is great but the cost of living has drastically gone up the past few years along with the traffic and crime. We have initially looked at some houses in the Stroudsburg, PA area.

We plan on flying out there sometime next year to check it out but I welcome any insight into the area from the locals on here.

    Thanks

Be ready for a HUGE culture shock. I lived in CO and also lived in Poconos also. Prepare for a bunch less sun and colder temps. You won't have the same off-road opportunities as CO .
There is some really good musicians that come thru and really good food. If you are a hunter there is really good deer hunting, you will be close to Philadelphia and NYC, also with in 8 drive time of Montreal and DC .

Thanks for the info! We moved 8 times while in the military so I'm sure we can adjust.

Going from being able to camp anywhere to only in certain spots is a huge kick to the face . There are some areas in the Poconos that are pretty sketchy . I have a friend on a SWAT team and I get some good stories.

Know that Monroe County is now for the most just a bed room for people that fled long island and New York City .

Unless you need to live in a town the size of Stroudsburg or larger

Your wife will say this is not where I grew up .

No clue if your retiring or if you need work .

Lots of better options out there the way I look at things it comes down to just what you want and need

There’s a reason the cost of living is so high in Colorado, as I’m sure you of all people understand. ITS NICE!!!!

I’d take a few vacations to the Northeast. Maybe in Fall and Winter to be sure it’s where you want to be. It may be more dreary than you remember.

I live in Upstate NY for now and I’m constantly looking for the right job in the right spot in the Southeast, if you don’t have to live somewhere specific consider North Carolina???

FWIW I have a friend who was in the AF in Colorado who moved back “home” to Upstate NY, she hasn’t always been happy about her choice.

Final ramble, if you have school age children, besides the obvious of wanting good schools, move somewhere you want to retire because once they settle down and start a family just try to pry your wife away from the grandkids lol...

Good luck with whatever you decide and thank you for your service to our great Nation.
