What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Is there anything wrong with welding the gussets on while the spindles are on the truck? I have a set I need welded on

 

People do it. But since these were a set I bought for my 4x conversion and I wanted to put a new set of wheel bearings in while they waited to be installed. I just did it before I put them on.

 

The Pro's are definitely a nice looking tire but I have to say they are a bit disappointing otherwise.

I have about 12K on my set of 285/75-16s now, with two big adventures that include everything except snow/ice and just the weekend, a lot of very slick old snow/icy conditions. In all situations, the pros are just not quite as good as they seem like they should be.

Full disclosure, I come from a BFG MT background. Several sets in fact, going back to the original KM tread pattern, then to two sets of KM2s in the 33x10.5-15 size.

The way I feel right now, my next set will be either a KM2 or KM3.

 

I don’t think I’m gonna go with a mud terrain. Typically have to drive 100-200 miles before I hit trails

 

Will welding them on fuck up the bearings? Wish I knew someone that could weld that good

Many have done it without issue to the bearings, including myself.

 

Sweet thanks wanted them installed prior to my long travel might just buy another set of spindles to have someone weld them on then change the spindles out

 

I'm going back to ATs after many years of running MTs. Tired of the road noise, poor tread life, and horrible snow performance. I have a buddy that use to go everywhere I did with Michelins, so can't be too detrimental.

You can get Coopers, Falkens, Toyos, and probably a few others in 285/75r17.

If I feel they hold me back that much offroad, I'll probably spring for a set of the Yokohama MT's next season.

I don't understand this. Is it because of how many total miles you feel you need to get out of a set? Or is it because of the trail conditions you typically must face on the trails you do?

 

Are you saying the Yokahama MTs are like an AT?

 

No, but they're supposed to be quiet for an MT.

What I am saying is if the ATs don't fit the bill, I'll again accept the trade offs of an MT.

 

I don’t do anything crazy hard, so an AT performs fine and it’s got he added benefits of less road noise and longer life. Thinking about keeping an eye out for a used set of MTs for some of my harder wheeling trips

 

100-200 miles? hahahahaha, I wish I was in that situation. My last trip was 1200+ miles to dirt.

What's your top contender AT right now? I really liked my Duratrac's despite all the shit they seem to garner on TW (which I too experienced - had two punctures with them, but still really liked them). Just so little available in 255/85R16.

 

Today when I pulled into a little shop to borrow there lift to see where the diff fluid was coming from. Made it nice to pull the skid off to check everything out.

 

The only real down fall I've seen with ATs I've seen has been with gooey, sticky mud. They don't clean out as will as MTs in that stuff. They are not always quieter.

 

Does the camburg long travel kit come as bare metal? Thinking of changing my kit out for the newer style.

 

Just a few personal situations.
Slipping in side hill situations with shallow ruts and a wet top layer, Tree roots wet grass. First hand the only place I found all terrains to out perform were sand and dry summer dirt.

Sucks to turn around on the bottom of a hill in a hay feild, cause the grass is wet and all terrains dont grab hard enough.

Edit sand not snow.
